Franco Colapinto made a serious impression when he made his debut in Formula 1 with Williams last season.
Replacing Logan Sargeant for the final nine races, the Argentine scored five points, which was four more than his predecessor managed in 36 Grand Prix starts. Colapinto was immediately on the pace of teammate Alex Albon, but several heavy crashes hampered him and the team.
Nevertheless, his impact was noticeable, as a wave of sponsors from Argentina came to Williams. His commercial value, as well as his potential talent on track, made him an attractive option for teams in 2025.
Red Bull were interested in Colapinto, but ended up stepping away due to his crashes. In the end, Flavio Briatore signed the 21-year-old to Alpine as a reserve driver, with it being clear that the former Benetton and Renault boss wanted him in a full-time seat.
Sure enough, Colapinto replaced Jack Doohan after the Miami GP on an initial five-race deal. The Argentine is happy to be a part of the Alpine brand, and has hinted that someone like Ferrari may not be for him.

Franco Colapinto wants to be with brands that are ‘for the people’ unlike Ferrari in Argentina
Speaking via Mercado Ads, Colapinto shared that he wants to associate himself with brands that are ‘for the people’. He says that a lot of people in Argentina own a Renault, but a Ferrari is ‘impossible’ to buy in the nation, making them a brand he does not want to associate with.
“There are a couple of brands that are incredible for drivers, for athletes, for people,” he said.
“I do not know if I relate that much to that, since what I always look for, what I want to relate to, is brands that are close to the people, brands that are, of course, present in everyday life, in daily life, for example.
“I don’t know, a Renault, a lot of people have a Renault in Argentina. It’s a brand that’s not like Ferrari, who’s going to have a Ferrari in Argentina?
“You know what I mean? One of the brands that are impossible to buy. I want to be related to someone who is part of the people too and not just for an exclusive brand only they can buy, I don’t know, Brad Pitt and more, you know what I mean?”

Franco Colapinto could be out of Alpine soon as pressure begins to mount
While Colapinto is glad to be a part of Alpine, he may not be associated with them for much longer. The Argentine is facing pressure to keep his seat as he struggles to find performance as Doohan’s replacement.
He has failed to score points for Alpine in four races as the team sits bottom of the standings. In theory, the Austrian Grand Prix is the final race of his alleged five-race deal.

Briatore has rubbished rumours that Colapinto will be replaced, stating that he must be given time to improve. But speculation is ramping up about his future in the sport.
Colapinto’s future is ‘far from secure’ as he fights to stay on the grid. Having a strong weekend at the Red Bull Ring will be vital for his career, with the likes of Sergio Perez being linked with Alpine in recent weeks.
