For the first time since 2010, Formula 1 will see at least three drivers fighting for the championship as the 2025 season heads to Abu Dhabi.

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are separated by 16 points heading into the season finale. Max Verstappen sits between them in second, 12 points behind the former.

Verstappen’s win at the Qatar GP has brought him back into contention after McLaren made a huge strategy blunder. Piastri had dominated the weekend and looked on course to win the race until the Woking outfit did not pit their drivers during the safety car on lap seven.

That left the McLarens behind Verstappen after their two mandatory stops, with Piastri finishing second and Norris fourth. Andrea Stella admitted McLaren were wrong with their strategy, and it has now put them under even more pressure from Verstappen.

The Dutchman now has the momentum heading into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, having cut his gap to the championship leader down from 104 points to 12 in the last eight races. It sets up an intense title battle at the final race of the season.

Formula 1 fans choose Max Verstappen as the overwhelming favourite for the 2025 championship

Ahead of the 2025 finale in Abu Dhabi, F1 Oversteer asked fans to choose their favourite for the championship on Facebook.

Using the stats from the poll, Verstappen has come out as the overwhelming favourite, with 13,000 votes. Norris comes in second with just over 3,500 votes, with Piastri third with 1,400.

In the comments, fans reiterated their choice, with Verstappen coming out on top over the McLarens in Abu Dhabi for the title.

“Max..all the way,” said one fan. Another said: “Max needs no backup. He’s in control.”

“There can be only 1. M4X-5,” wrote one user, cleverly referencing how Verstappen will become a five-time champion. He will also be only the second F1 driver to win five consecutive titles behind Michael Schumacher.

Another fan said: “If you fight yourself back from 104 points behind then MAX deserves the title,” while another wrote: “Max will make it his masterpiece!”

McLaren need a hard reset if they want to beat Max Verstappen for the 2025 championship

It is an advantage to Verstappen heading into the final race of the season, while McLaren need to get their act together if they want to seal the deal.

Jolyon Palmer says Norris needs a reset ahead of Abu Dhabi. He needs to be in the right head space if he wants to win the title, but he has Verstappen and teammate Piastri to contend with.

McLaren will not use team orders, giving freedom among their drivers to fight for the championship. This is another advantage for Verstappen, as Red Bull can prioritise him in Abu Dhabi.

Things are relaxed in Milton Keynes, but the same cannot be said in Woking. Unless McLaren can mitigate their mistakes, it will be hard to count Verstappen out for the title.
