The upcoming F1 season will see 22 drivers battle it out for glory, and fans have already made up their minds on who will have a more impressive campaign out of Oscar Piastri and George Russell.

It can be difficult to compare the efforts of two drivers who race in different calibres of machinery, but by comparing their performances in the respective teammate battles, number of mistakes and the all-important ‘eye-test’, it’s possible to paint a clearer picture of who is better.

According to Toto Wolff, George Russell is one of the most underrated drivers on the F1 grid. The Mercedes chief has put all of his faith in the British driver to lead the Silver Arrows in the coming years and hopes that he will be repaid in championships one day.

On the other hand, Oscar Piastri has been tipped to be a future world champion by F1 icon Martin Brundle, which is a sentiment that has also been echoed in the past by David Coulthard.

In a poll put to users of the F1 Oversteer Facebook page, fans were asked to vote on who they think will have a better season this year between Piastri and Russell, and the results were overwhelmingly in favour of one driver.

F1 fans agree that Oscar Piastri will have a better season than George Russell this year

Piastri was the landslide winner of the poll, with over 83% of F1 fans believing that the McLaren star would outshine his rival on the race track at the time of writing.

Many of them also opted to share their thoughts on why they chose to vote for the Australian driver over the more experienced Russell.

Some fans referenced Piastri’s difficult end to the season last year as being a big motivation for the 24-year-old to put things right.

One commented, “Oscar’s year is coming big time,” while another said, “Piastri, if he’s allowed to race.”

Another shared a similar sentiment, posting, “Oscar should be out for blood as his 2025 season finished pretty unsatisfactorily. I think he’s got a title in him, not sure George has, to be honest.”

Indeed, the calibre of cars that both drivers will be at the wheel of is a big part of the equation, as noted by one user who said, “Oscar is a better driver, but the car is the question.”

Piastri gained valuable experience of what it’s like to be in an F1 title fight last season, and one fan believes that is the key to him besting Russell over the course of a whole season. They said, “Oscar. He’s got what it takes, for sure.”

Another fan kept it short and sweet, but made their feelings clear, commenting, “Oscar, no contest.”

Oscar Piastri is optimistic about McLaren’s chances of challenging for a title again in 2026

While the most recent season concluded with a sour taste in Piastri’s mouth, the Australian has his sights firmly set on coming back even stronger this year to challenge for another title.

Piastri made a bullish statement on McLaren’s new F1 car in a recent interview with an Australian broadcaster, highlighting how the Woking-based outfit always finds a way to produce a somewhat competitive car for their drivers.

It may be quite an important campaign for his future at the team as well, with it emerging that Piastri has set a date to sit down with manager Mark Webber and discuss his next steps in the sport.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from the papaya ever since the team orders debacle at McLaren began.

Ferrari and Red Bull are both rumoured to be interested in what the nine-time Grand Prix winner can bring to the fold.
