Formula 1 fans choose their Mount Rushmore of McLaren drivers with Lewis Hamilton omitted

McLaren have housed some of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, including Lewis Hamilton, but fans have not chosen him for the team’s Mount Rushmore.

Up until 2025, the seven-time champion was the last McLaren driver to win the title. Hamilton beat Felipe Massa by a single point in 2008 in the final race of the season in Brazil.

After that triumph, the Woking outfit struggled to mount a serious title challenge. Hamilton left for Mercedes in 2013, having won 21 races and scored 49 podiums for McLaren between 2007 and 2012, but even that was not enough to feature on the team’s Mount Rushmore.

Hamilton was McLaren’s 12th drivers’ champion, until Lando Norris clinched the 2025 crown at the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. He fought with teammate Oscar Piastri and defending four-time champion Max Verstappen, beating the latter by just two points.

Norris joins some of the greatest names in F1 history to have won the championship with the Woking outfit. But the Brit does not make the final four either.

Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen, Alain Prost and Niki Lauda named by F1 fans as McLaren’s Mount Rushmore

F1 Oversteer put it to fans on Facebook to name their Mount Rushmore of McLaren F1 drivers. After multiple comments and votes, the four names have been chosen.

Ayrton Senna was the overwhelming top pick, with the Brazilian having won all three of his titles with McLaren. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.

The next most popular name was double world champion Mika Hakkinen, who won his titles in 1998 and 1999. Interestingly, Hakkinen did not get along with Senna so well during their time at McLaren, with the pair not speaking after an ill-received joke from the former.

Hamilton and McLaren’s founder, Bruce McLaren, were pipped to the final two spots on the team’s Mount Rushmore by Alain Prost and Niki Lauda. The pair fought for the world championship in 1984, with Lauda beating Prost by just half a point.

The Austrian’s victory marked his second title since his near-fatal accident in 1976 and his first since briefly retiring from the sport. Prost went on to win three titles with McLaren and created a tense and iconic rivalry with Senna.

Which other McLaren drivers missed out on Mount Rushmore?

McLaren have had eight champions in their history, with four of them making the cut for Mount Rushmore. Hamilton and Norris, their two most recent champions, were omitted from selection by fans.

Emerson Fittipaldi won McLaren’s first ever championship in 1974 before his replacement, James Hunt, beat Lauda for their second title two years later. Neither driver would win another championship, but both equally displayed top talent behind the wheel.

Then there are the non-McLaren champions to consider, with the team having many outstanding talents over the years. Kimi Raikkonen came tantalisingly close to the title with the Woking outfit in 2003 and 2005, before winning it with Ferrari in 2007.

David Coulthard also came close to glory with McLaren, while other names such as Gerhard Berger, Jody Scheckter and Denny Hulme add to the team’s rich history in F1.
