The season might not start for another month, but F1 are already providing fans with some big news after announcing the Madrid Grand Prix will be joining the calendar.

Formula 1 will be heading to the streets of the Spanish capital from 2026 onwards 45 years after the last race held in the city.

Sauber reserve driver Theo Pourchaire has liked the announcement from F1, but looking at their Instagram post, it’s not been the most popular decision the sport has ever made.

The Formula 1 calendar has changed an awful lot in the last few years.

Last year, the Las Vegas Grand Prix became the latest circuit added to the schedule and was one of the most exciting races of the season even if it faced some opposition from drivers like Max Verstappen.

In 2022, Miami made its debut in F1 as a purpose-built temporary circuit, and the year before Qatar’s Lusail International Circuit made its bow as well.

Zandvoort and Saudi Arabia’s street circuit in Jeddah were the other new races added this decade.

There’s a real mix of dedicated tracks and street circuits being added to the grid, but almost exclusively traditional circuits are dropping off the calendar as a result.

Fans have now made their feelings clear about F1 adding another circuit that involves street racing in Madrid.

The track is set to include some ‘non-street sections’ but whether that’s enough for traditionalists that follow the sport is yet to be seen.

F1 fans not happy with Madrid GP announcement

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Formula 1 announced the new track and there are plenty of fans who feel like they’re making a mistake heading to the Spanish capital.

The comments included responses such as, “Nobody wants street races”, “Not sure we want another street circuit” and simply “Somebody please stop them”.

Any announcement like this is never going to be popular with every F1 fan and it’s yet to be seen if the current design of the Madrid circuit will be signed off.

It also brings the future of the race in Barcelona into doubt as their contract with F1 ends after the 2026 season.

We could see a year with two Spanish races and an extension hasn’t been completely ruled out.

However, the calendar is expanding quickly and globally and it’s unlikely despite how popular the sport is in Spain that they will be given the chance to host two races in the long term.
