Ferrari could try and buy ‘really quick’ Formula 1 driver out his contract for 2025 season

Ferrari have been tipped to potentially shake up the grid completely and try and buy McLaren star Oscar Piastri out of his current contract.

The Formula 1 driver’s market is going to be fascinating this year and both of Ferrari’s drivers are entering the last year of their deals.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist and former team manager Peter Windsor has shared his theory on what might happen at Ferrari this year.

With so many drivers entering the final year of their contracts, every team will be closely monitoring what their rivals are doing.

There are theoretically two teams that shouldn’t be worrying about that right now.

One of those is Mercedes with both drivers tied down until 2025, although Windsor has already admitted that he could see Lewis Hamilton potentially retiring if the car isn’t good enough this year.

The other team is McLaren, with Lando Norris signed up until the end of next season and Oscar Piastri for a further year.

However, Windsor now believes that Ferrari might consider buying Piastri out of his contract if they lose one of their star drivers.

The 22-year-old was superb during his first season in Formula 1 last year.

However, the idea of him making a move to Ferrari just two years into his McLaren career seems very unlikely.

Windsor thinks Ferrari could try and buy Piastri out of his contract

Speaking about the possibility of Leclerc potentially replacing Hamilton if he retires, Windsor said: “And then Ferrari might take, well they might take Lando [Norris] I guess.

“They might take [Oscar] Piastri, they might buy Piastri out of his McLaren contract.

“Piastri doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of mentions but I think he’s really quick.”

There’s a lot of hope at McLaren that the combination of Piastri and Norris could end up dominating the sport one day.

Eddie Jordan has already suggested that the Australian could have Max Verstappen looking over his shoulder one day.

He’s also earned a fan in Ralf Schumacher who has suggested that the 22-year-old ‘never makes mistakes’.

The prospect of Ferrari buying Piastri out of his contract seems far-fetched at this stage of the season.

Charles Leclerc could announce a contract extension sooner rather than later, but Carlos Sainz’s future is more in the balance.

Whatever happens, the 22-year-old being a man in demand is a sign of just how well his first 12 months went in Formula 1.
