Ferrari corner speed data shows Lewis Hamilton has no excuses at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton are heading into the Hungarian Grand Prix with a lot working in their favour.

Unfortunately for Hamilton, a controversial five-second penalty cost him a potential podium finish at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Many felt that Hamilton’s penalty made no sense, given that both he and George Russell described their coming together as a ‘racing incident.’

But the Briton will be hoping to put this result behind him, as he and Ferrari look forward to the Hungarian Grand Prix to continue building their momentum.

Lewis Hamilton has had a great history at the Hungaroring, and the team’s speed data suggests he will have a massive advantage this weekend.

The Hungaroring is one of the most unique tracks on the F1 calendar, as it doesn’t feature many straight-line sections, and features far more tur

The track contains 14 turns, with Turn 6 and Turn 8 being considered two of the trickiest turns to navigate for drivers during the race.

However, what makes Hungaroring perfect for Ferrari is that fact that most of the turns are low or medium-speed corners, which have been Ferrari’s strength this season.

A quick look at Ferrari’s race telemetry data from similar tracks like Montreal, which also features low and medium-speed corners in abundance, they have an edge on tighter, more trickier turns.

Their telemetry data shows that they can manoeuvre the cars at a higher minimum apex speed compared to other teams, giving them a major edge.

Specifically in Montreal, while Ferrari lost time to Mercedes on the straights, they were easily outpacing Mercedes by upwards of about 1.5 to 3 km/h at minimum apex speed.

With an already impressive advantage on tracks with low and medium-speed corners, Ferrari’s upcoming upgrade package this weekend will only improve their superiority compared to their rivals.

Lewis Hamilton’s track record at Hungarian GP is among the best

If the mechanical edge for Ferrari wasn’t enough to give the seven-time world champion a huge boost in confidence, his successful record at the Hungaroring certainly will.

Hamilton is the most successful driver in Hungarian Grand Prix history, having won the race on eight different occasions. But his numbers are even more impressive when you look at them in more detail.

Hamilton has earned pole seven times at Hungaroring in his career, started nine times on the front row, and 14 times in a top-five starting position, with an average qualifying position of 3.94.

And beyond winning the race eight times, Hamilton has earned 12 podiums, and 16 top-five finishes at the track.

His worst performance at the track came last season, as his struggles with Ferrari led to him qualifying and finish in P12. But Hamilton is now back to his signature best after a difficult debut year with Ferrari.

Hamilton’s history isn’t just the stuff of myth, it is also a warning to the rest of the track. Even the championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, believes Hamilton will be fearsome at the track.

With his confidence now fully back, Hamilton will be eager to erase that memory and replace it with a better one – potentially a winning memory.
