Fernando Alonso is notorious for bad career decisions and moves, and he is once again left scratching his head as Aston Martin are in crisis in 2026.
The Spaniard joined the team in 2023 from Alpine, and he hoped this move would bring him the success that he had missed since his two world titles in 2005 and 2006. Initially, it looked like it would be, as he scored eight podiums and finished P4 in his first season.
However, Alonso has not scored another podium since 2023, with Aston Martin regressing in performance in the last two years. 2026 gave him newfound optimism, with a regulation change, Honda engines, and Adrian Newey, whom he has longed to work for.

But that has quickly turned into a nightmare, as the Silverstone outfit looks desperately underprepared for 2026. They were already behind in development with the wind tunnel, and Honda’s serious issues with the power unit raise doubts that Aston Martin will qualify in Australia.
Honda hopes to find a solution by Shanghai, but Alonso and Aston Martin’s frustration have already been made clear, and the former’s patience is wearing thin.

Fernando Alonso’s ‘grand ambitions’ for Aston Martin are hanging by a thread in 2026
Alonso is said to be on the verge of a breakdown at Aston Martin as he is faced with a challenging 2026 season that could see him languish at the back.
It is not the reunion with Honda that he would have wanted – the irony is that he is facing the same problems with them as he did with McLaren. Now, as per journalist Scott Mitchell-Malm, his ‘grand ambitions’ for Aston Martin are hanging by a thread.
He said via The Race YouTube channel: “After spending two decades waiting for the chance to drive an Adrian Newey-designed F1 car, Alonso heads into 2026 not even certain he’ll have a realistic shot at finishing the first race.
Is Fernando Alonso cursed?
“The Aston Martin package looks compromised, short on performance, and carrying reliability concerns. And at best, Alonso begins the year hoping for a rapid rate of development simply to reach midfield competitiveness.
“The grand ambitions he once held for this project now hang by a thread. There’s a very real risk that his faith in Aston Martin and the final truly competitive years of his F1 life are eroded by Honda’s struggles.
“Given how painfully his McLaren reunion unfolded in 2015, that would represent a bitter final twist. All Alonso can hope for is a silver lining later on in the season or perhaps momentum to carry into 2027 if he sticks around.
“But there’s little doubt he enters 2026 facing one of the most challenging campaigns of his career. That will surely test his patience and it could get fiery depending on how candid Alonso chooses to be.”

Adrian Newey must fix Aston Martin’s problems or risk Fernando Alonso walking away
Aston Martin’s problems are not just exclusive to Honda. Jolyon Palmer says not a ‘single aspect’ of the AMR26 works after seeing it first-hand in pre-season testing.
The team racked up the fewest laps and mileage across Barcelona and Bahrain, leaving them on the back foot heading into Melbourne. Newey has a huge job on his hands to fix their woes and get them somewhat competitive in 2026.
He is already running out of time to satisfy Alonso, who is quickly running out of patience with a project that he hoped he would go into the first race of 2026 as a favourite for victory.
But instead, reports are suggesting that Alonso is likely to retire in 2026 if Aston Martin’s issues are not improved. It would be a bitter end to what has been an incredible career.
