Aston Martin have been gearing up for Formula 1’s upcoming rule changes for some time and will arrive in 2026 with some excitement.

A 44-year-old Fernando Alonso will be targeting a third drivers’ championship, some 20 years after he earned his last crown.

The signing of Adrian Newey has created a buzz around Aston Martin, but it has also created an expectation that they will be competitive.

A new engine deal with Honda is further cause for excitement, as they are the only team working with the Japanese manufacturer and will have their full attention. They could be dangerous.

Alonso is learning from ‘every conversation’ with Newey and believes that the Briton is a fantastic solution to many of the team’s car problems.

Gary Anderson is a ‘fan’ of one Aston Martin change which altered the gap on Alonso’s front wing. Over the final 10 races of the season, it could bring a big performance benefit.

Fernando Alonso will love ‘rumblings’ about Honda’s engine ahead of 2026 Aston Martin partnership

Aston Martin’s sim driver has spotted something ‘crazy’ on their 2026, and says that he feels like he’s sat on a rocket while driving it.

It’s hard to replicate exactly what that will feel like in real life, but it’s a good sign for their drivers. Lance Stroll has another year left on his deal and should be with the team next year.

Formula 1 journalist Luke Smith has been speaking about the positive ‘rumblings’ coming out regarding Honda’s power unit, which Alonso will love to hear.

“You can get everything together and assemble all these stars, but if they don’t gel properly and it doesn’t actually work, then that’s the hardest part, really,” he said. “I think with Aston, it is such an interesting team because their state-of-the-art factory at Silverstone is incredible.

“I said to some friends there, it’s kind of a case of when you win a championship, not if, just because you look at how slick everything is, how well it is all being put together. They’ve got very deep pockets with Lawrence Stroll that they’ve been able to delve into, and they’ve attracted top talent.

“I think having Adrian Newey on board that’s really exciting. The Aston Martin/Honda project as well, getting them involved as well as a partner, again, a really, really good thing. Where that engine stacks up, it’s so hard to know. I think rumblings have been quietly positive, which is good,” Smith continued.

“They’ve done a decent job in recent years, the Red Bull engine is a Honda effectively. I think there are a lot of reasons why Aston Martin will be quite positive, but you just don’t know exactly how well it’s going to go.”

Fernando Alonso hinted that Aston Martin may have solved Adrian Newey’s big concern

With a strong race from their rivals, Aston Martin could easily plummet back down to eighth place in the constructors’ standings.

For a team that came so close to winning races as recently as 2023, they have failed to capitalise on the momentum they built, and are being forced to rebuild their foundations with Newey.

Alonso hinted Aston Martin have solved Newey’s big concern before the summer break, by introducing upgrades that have worked.

However, they probably want to see them work on a few more tracks before making a final decision on how effective they have been.
