Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso must be wondering when his luck is finally going to change.
Fernando Alonso has had one of the most perplexing and frustrating careers in Formula 1 history.
Many drivers would love to say that they’ve won two drivers’ championships, but Alonso has already been someone with the potential to achieve far more.
He joined McLaren twice, once when Lewis Hamilton arrived and set the world alight, and then again later in his career when they had their most miserable spell in modern F1 history.
Ferrari insiders loved working with Alonso, but could never deliver him a car capable of beating Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull.

The Spaniard has now gone more than a decade without adding to his tally of 32 Grand Prix victories, and he’s watched 15 different drivers stand on the top step of the podium since his most recent win.
Even at the most recent Italian Grand Prix, Alonso extracted the maximum out of his Aston Martin, leapfrogged Gabriel Bortoleto in the pit lane, only for his suspension to break and ruin his chance of scoring points.
The Spaniard has outqualified teammate Lance Stroll 27 times in a row, but the Canadian has scored two more points than him this year.
However, Alonso will hope that the upcoming F1 regulations changes will coincide with a change in his fortunes, and one man who could be responsible for that is Adrian Newey.
He’s now described what the design genius is doing behind the scenes at their Silverstone base that’s giving him confidence going into next year.

Adrian Newey doing something Fernando Alonso has ‘never seen before’ at Aston Martin
Alonso was quoted by Mundo Deportivo after an interview with a team sponsor and asked about Newey’s impact on the team.
He explained: “He’s undoubtedly the best designer in the history of the sport, and probably no one will ever match his numbers.
“His way of working explains some of the results he’s achieved. He has an incredible way of seeing the car as a single piece that works together, not as individual devices that provide performance.
“He’s able to anticipate the entire car as if it were a single piece. He seems to have everything under control at all times.

“He has a self-confidence I’ve probably never seen before. He’s not worried about other teams, other philosophies, or other designs. He believes his will be the best.
Asked how that makes him feel ahead of the 2026 season, Alonso answered. “Very sure.
“Newey came to Monaco for the race, he was in the garage. He doesn’t talk to many people, but at the same time, he’s always thinking and tinkering with things.
“The front wing here, the suspension there… I think he’s more of an artist than an engineer.”

Fernando Alonso learning from ‘every conversation’ with Adrian Newey
Newey’s record in Formula 1 is unprecedented, delivering success to every team he’s ever worked with.
His success can be tracked all the way back to the 1990 F1 season, when he helped minnows Leyton House secure a 2nd place finish through Ivan Capelli at the French Grand Prix.
Newey has won titles with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull and will be aiming to repeat that success with Aston Martin.

Ahead of the changing regulations, Newey has warned every F1 team that they might struggle with the new ruleset, given how both the engine and aerodynamic rules are changing so dramatically.
Immediate success is unlikely given the base level Aston Martin are starting at compared to the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes.
However, Alonso admitted he’s learning from Newey with ‘every conversation’ they have, and after dreaming about working together for so long, 2026 represents their first opportunity to enjoy some success together.
