Romain Grosjean will make a shock return next week when he steps into a Formula 1 cockpit for the first time in five years.

The Frenchman will reunite with his ex-employer Haas for a test in a two-year-old machine at Mugello, which appears to have happened out of nowhere. Originally, Grosjean had been promised a test by Toto Wolff and Mercedes, but his first chance will be with the team he spent five seasons with.

Although Grosjean failed to achieve much of note at Haas between 2016 and 2020, he helped build them into midfield contenders. His best result was a fourth place at the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix, in what remains their best season to date.

He was known as a ‘first-lap nutcase’ and once received a one-race ban for a collision he triggered at the start of the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix. Since leaving Formula 1, he has spent a few seasons in IndyCar and endurance racing.

Grosjean revealed his Mercedes F1 test will go ahead just six months ago, after admitting that he hadn’t had the time to arrange the outing properly. One year away from single-seater cockpits after losing his Juncos Hollinger racing seat at the end of 2024, seems to have created some space in his calendar.

Fans are delighted to see the ‘hero’ Romain Grosjean return for F1 test with Haas

Grosjean’s career ended abruptly at the end of 2020, after a spectacular and fiery shunt at the Bahrain Grand Prix. He walked free, but it would spell the end of his career, and he hasn’t had the chance to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car since.

His results in IndyCar were solid, but even after joining the front-running Andretti outfit, a victory proved to be elusive. In four seasons, his best finish in the drivers’ standings wound up being 13th.

After the announcement of his latest test with Haas, fans have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter), to share their excitement over the move.

“Goosebumps,” detailed one excited individual, while another exclaimed, “So thrilling to see Grosjean back in the cockpit after all these years!”

“Ready to see the comeback,” was the response of a fan who has been waiting for his return, and someone else was just left in awe of the announcement, saying, “The fact that he survived that inferno and wants to drive F1 again proves race car drivers are a different species entirely.”

Simply put, another fan said, “Hero,” while one final response read, “Would love to see that.”

It appears that the 39-year-old still has a lot of support, and even though the sport moves on very quickly, it hasn’t forgotten about him just yet.

How did Romain Grosjean fare during the 2020 Formula 1 season?

Although Grosjean went through some tough spells in Formula 1, his final season in 2020 would end up being his first full-time campaign of his career.

Scoring just two points at the Nurburgring that year, he struggled to get to grips with Haas machinery that had fallen behind its rivals.

By far his best showing was in 2013, as he racked up six podiums on his way to a seventh-place finish in the championship.

His Lotus-Renault years are remembered for strong results and a lot of incidents. As he grew more experienced, he managed to restrict his crashes, but never stood on the podium again after 2015.
