Fernando Alonso hopes he will stay in Formula 1 beyond 2026, and fans are confident that he still has the talent and ability to fight at the front.
The Spanish veteran is in his 23rd season in F1 in 2026, leading a new era for Aston Martin as they partner with Honda for the 2026 regulation changes. Thus far, it has been a disaster, with the power unit being underdeveloped and severe vibrations causing physical problems for the drivers.
Alonso is out of contract at the end of the 2026 season. Now being 44 years old, many have been wondering how long he will continue in F1.
Prove me wrong: The end of the 2026 F1 season is the perfect time for Fernando Alonso to retire 👋
Alonso expected 2026 to be his ‘last season’ coming into the year, but the Aston Martin driver now seems determined to stay on the grid.
Alonso hopes not to retire in 2026, claiming that the time has not come for him to walk away from the sport. Many fans agree that he still has the ability to compete.

Fans think ‘freak of nature’ Fernando Alonso is not done with Formula 1
Fans on Reddit discussed Alonso’s recent comments, believing that he is still able to fight in F1: “If you put him in a title-fighting car, he can still deliver a fight for the title, but you guys are still not ready for this conversation,” said one fan.
Another agreed: “I mean it’s just true. The performance is still there.”
“Man is genuinely ageless, watched him win those championships back in the day and he still looks like he could outqualify half the grid on any given Saturday. Let him cook as long as he wants,” said one user.
Prove us wrong, F1 will never quite recover when two-time world champion Fernando Alonso hangs up his helmet…
“Alonso is just built differently in a somewhat literal sense. Might see him racing till his 60s somewhere else. But i reckon maybe 2 more years of F1,” wrote another fan, while one said: “He’s still fast enough, so no reason to stop if he still has the motivation.”
Finally, one said: “He’s a bit of a freak of nature, despite the fact he’ll be 45 this summer he seems to have fought off the natural decline, unless something truly bizarre happens I can’t see him suddenly ‘losing it’ now. Give him a 2023 situation again and he’ll still put the thing on Podiums etc. Here’s hoping for a couple more years and a few Podiums at least.”

Fernando Alonso still believes he is one of F1’s top drivers
Pedro De La Rosa thought Alonso would retire years ago, thinking that he would hang up his helmet in 2024. However, the Spaniard has kept going with Aston Martin, and he hopes to stay longer.
He has not really had a competitive car with the Silverstone outfit, with the 2023 season being the closest he got to consistent top performances. Aston Martin have since tailed off and are struggling to reach the same heights.
But even with a poor car behind him, Alonso continues to extract the absolute most from it. He registered the team’s only finish to date in 2026 at Suzuka.
Alonso thinks he is the best driver on the grid, and while he maintains that belief, it is hard to imagine that he will look to give that up.
