Lewis Hamilton suffered his first retirement as a Ferrari driver after he crashed out of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The seven-time champion was hoping to return to action from the summer break with a positive weekend after a disappointing start to life in Maranello. He is still waiting for his first Grand Prix podium in red.

However, the 40-year-old’s woes at Ferrari have continued at Zandvoort. Hamilton appeared to have understeer issues with his SF-25 as he spun twice during Friday’s practice sessions.

Hamilton qualified P7 for the Dutch Grand Prix behind teammate Charles Leclerc in fifth. The rain forecast for the race was set to shake up the order, with strategy playing a significant role in determining the outcome.

The Brit struggled to make up ground in the early stages due to the twisty nature of the circuit. As raindrops began to fall, Hamilton told race engineer Riccardo Adami to deploy an undercut on Leclerc and George Russell, but disaster struck soon after.

F1 fans tell Lewis Hamilton to retire after ‘weird’ Dutch Grand Prix crash

On lap 23, Ferrari brought Leclerc into the pits to try and make up ground. As Hamilton came through turn four, he caught the wet line on the outside and lost the rear end, slamming into the wall.

Leclerc could not make up the ground he had intended to as the safety car was deployed. Fans were left furious with Hamilton on X (formerly Twitter) as they called for the 40-year-old to call time on his F1 career.

One fan said: “So weird from Lewis.” Hamilton is renowned for his strength with the rear end of an F1 car.

“Guy has lost his edge over time,” said another user. One fan added: “Washed. Time to retire.”

Many fans were left saddened by Hamilton’s accident, given his struggles in 2025. One commented: “Sad to see a great champion losing his skills.”

“This has been so sad to see man he’s just not the same driver anymore….. Wouldn’t be shocked if he retired after this season,” wrote another user.

One disgruntled fan said: “Finally, Hamilton’s Ferrari fairy tale is exposed overrated and past his prime, he’s dragging the team down while Max proves real talent still rules. Time to retire and let a younger driver take the wheel!”

Has Lewis Hamilton lost his ‘magic’ in Formula 1?

Hamilton’s crash at Zandvoort piles even more misery onto his 2025 campaign. The Brit was utterly dejected before the summer break and even told Ferrari to replace him after a torrid weekend in Budapest.

Jacques Villeneuve is worried by Hamilton’s comments that he needs a ‘reset’ at Ferrari. The 1997 champion is concerned by the environment at the Maranello outfit, especially with the issues of communication with the pit wall.

F1 paddock insiders are questioning if Hamilton has lost his ‘magic’, with the 40-year-old not having an answer. His despondent comments have led to speculation that he could soon retire from the sport.

Some English journalists believe Hamilton could retire in 2025 and quit Ferrari early. He will be desperate to improve his form, especially with the team’s home event at Monza coming up next.
