Lando Norris needs redemption at the Austrian Grand Prix after he fell further behind teammate Oscar Piastri last time out in Canada.
The McLaren duo came together for the first time at the Canadian GP, with Norris faring the worst. The Brit tried to pass Piastri on the inside down the main straight, but the gap was not there as he hit the Aussie’s rear left tyre and crashed into the wall.
Norris was forced to retire and he was lucky not to cause a double McLaren DNF, as Piastri carried on to finish fourth. The result leaves Norris 22 points behind his teammate heading into the Austrian Grand Prix.
| Position | Drivers' Championship | Points |
| 1 | Oscar Piastri | 198 |
| 2 | Lando Norris | 176 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 155 |
| 4 | George Russell | 136 |
| 5 | Charles Leclerc | 104 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | 79 |
| 7 | Andrea Kimi Antonelli | 63 |
| 8 | Alexander Albon | 42 |
| 9 | Esteban Ocon | 22 |
| 10 | Isack Hadjar | 21 |
The 25-year-old now has a mountain to climb if he wants to get the better of Piastri, given his current form. Alex Dunne will replace Norris in FP1, which could hamper his preparations.
Norris comes to the Red Bull Ring off a huge low in Montreal, with question marks starting to come up about his title chances. Nico Rosberg thinks McLaren are worried about the 25-year-old, after stating that his engineer acted like a psychologist over the radio.
Norris is notorious for being self-critical and attacking himself for his mistakes. He admitted responsibility for the crash in Canada and is now looking to right the wrongs in Austria.

Lando Norris ‘not worried about anything’ as he looks to bounce back at the Austrian Grand Prix
Speaking ahead of the Grand Prix weekend on Thursday via the F1 YouTube channel, Norris appeared to be in high spirits as he spoke to the media with a smile on his face. He says he is ‘not worried’ as he has plenty of time to bounce back.
“There is a very long way [to go] in the season, so I’m not worried about anything.
“But of course, I know it’s always never a good thing to lose out on points, no matter what race it is. And obviously, last time out, I was the only one who lost the points.
“And that hurt me, I paid the price for misjudging things like I did. So, yeah, that’s that. And of course, I’ll move on and plenty of time to try and make up for that and try to turn things around.
“But things have still been very good. There still have been lots of positives, so I’m still slowly trying to improve on those things, or I’m trying to improve as quickly as I can, but things take time.”
