F1 fans rave about ‘crazy’ performance from six-point driver at Dutch Grand Prix

Pierre Gasly performed admirably during qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, breaking into Q3, and will start in 10th place for Sunday’s race.

The Frenchman outqualified his teammate Esteban Ocon, who was eliminated in the first part of qualifying and will start tomorrow’s 72-lap race in 17th place.

Gasly set a 1:10.977 in Q3, just over a second slower than pole-sitter Lando Norris who set the pace by three tenths of a second.

This is a big upturn in form compared to the start of the season, where both cars were knocked out in Q1 at the season opener in Bahrain, qualifying in 19th and 20th on the back row of the grid.

The qualifying session for the Dutch Grand Prix was an event that presented opportunities for drivers who are less likely to be in Q3 to grab a rare opportunity.

Both Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton were eliminated in Q2 and will start the Dutch Grand Prix from 11th and 12th place.

In a similar style to Gasly, Alex Albon took advantage of others’ misfortune and stormed into Q3 and will start in eighth place for Williams.

Gasly was comfortably faster than his teammate Ocon at Zandvoort, and he has hit the ground running after the summer break.

His blistering speed caught the attention of many fans on social media, as Gasly has a perfect opportunity to score points at the end of the Grand Prix. One of the fans who were impressed by Gasly was @probablyMarkLee, who was delighted for the Frenchman.

@ultimatecb94 said Max Verstappen was his star of qualifying and Gasly was ‘impressive’ throughout. @pageluvr wrote that Albon driving to eighth place and Gasly scoring 10th in qualifying was ‘crazy.’

@imrurecs acknowledged that Gasly wasn’t knocked out in Q2 and advanced to the final part of qualifying as big names stumbled. @carlosrada18 was pleased to see Gasly make it into Q3 and was happy for the entire Alpine team. @RodinCarlin posted that Gasly ‘looks alive’ at Zandvoort after a great drive to 10th place in qualifying.

A good result for Alpine may set up a strong end to the year

Alpine have struggled this season and have been sitting at the back of the field for much of the year in a disappointing campaign.

The French team sit eighth in the standings on just 11 points and they haven’t scored a podium finish with 10 rounds to go.

A good points finish at Zandvoort may settle the nerves at Enstone, which is welcoming a new team boss, Oliver Oakes.
