The Formula 1 podium was slightly more unique than in previous years, after Nico Hulkenberg finally finished in the top three.
Hulkenberg made his F1 debut in 2010, and while he’s come close to a podium finish and a maiden race win in 2012, he’s always missed out.
That all changed at Silverstone when Sauber made use of the changing conditions to enable him to jump from 19th on the grid to third.
After gaining places from drivers who gambled on slick tyres at the start, Sauber pitted Hulkenberg early in the race for a new set of Intermediates when it was clear there was more rain coming.
Hulkenberg would climb several places and eventually find himself in fourth behind Lance Stroll, going on to overtake the Aston Martin driver for the final podium spot.
Despite a brief moment when it looked like Lewis Hamilton would catch him in the Ferrari, Hulkenberg held on and took the first podium of his career. F1 fans took to social media after they spotted what the McLaren drivers did during the celebrations.

F1 fans unhappy with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after shunning Nico Hulkenberg
Many fans felt Hulkenberg should’ve been congratulated by the McLaren drivers and honoured on the podium, similar to what happened to Andrea Kimi Antonelli in Canada.
Instead, they appeared awkward, with one fan writing: “Just got proven right about Mclaren’s RANCID podium vibes, but it still breaks my heart like that is Nico’s FIRST podium. they’re unsportsmanlike & just plain selfish”
Another fan was unhappy with how McLaren handled it: “Both McLaren drivers are such losers. Nico just won his first podium in his ENTIRE career, and you couldn’t try and make him feel a bit welcome? seriously?”
One fan branded Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri “clueless” adding: “First podium, completely clueless, and then they ignored him on the podium, karma will get you one day McLaren, don’t worry”
Another fan said: “They didn’t spray Nico. Oscar looked at Lando then looked at his team and sprayed them first instead. Lando just won his home gp?” With another saying: “BOO to the McLaren drivers because it was Nico 1st podium and y’all couldn’t even spray him with some champagne, literally so anticlimactic”
Some compared it to how Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton acted during their title battles: “Even when Hamilton and Max would end up on the podium under controversial circumstances, I remember Hamilton had the courtesy to spray the champagne around on Max.”
Another fan felt it should have been made more special for Hulkenberg: “Yeah, they should have made it special for Hulk, disappointed with this.”

Nico Hulkenberg ends podiumless F1 run
Hulkenberg finally ended his races without scoring a podium record, having contested 239 starts before he stood on the top steps.
It is a record that the German held throughout his career, having failed to score a top-three finish across four different teams in F1 including the Renault works team.
| Driver | Race starts |
| Nico Hulkenberg | 239 |
| Carlos Sainz | 101 |
| Martin Brundle | 91 |
| Mika Salo | 73 |
| Jenson Button | 68 |
Carlos Sainz took 101 race starts before his first podium, while it took 2009 world champion Jenson Button 68 starts before he achieved one.
Currently, the driver on the grid with the most races without a podium is Yuki Tsunoda, who has contested 99 races without a top three finish.
