An Italian driver has not won a race for the iconic Ferrari F1 outfit for over 40 years, and F1 fans have made it clear that they don’t want to see Kimi Antonelli try to put an end to that barren streak.

Hope of an Italian world champion in Formula 1 was renewed upon Kimi Antonelli’s maiden victory at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. He has since gone on to win the following three Grands Prix and placed himself in a comfortable position at the top of the F1 standings.

Is Kimi Antonelli the best teenager F1 has ever seen?

It’s been a long wait for Italian F1 fans, with Alberto Ascari’s 1953 feat proving to be the most recent occurrence of a driver from the Mediterranean country taking ultimate glory in the sport.

Since the 19-year-old emerged as a potential generational talent in F1, questions were raised over why Ferrari hadn’t spotted his talent earlier. Despite being beaten to the punch by Mercedes, a future move for Antonelli can’t be ruled out.

F1 fans say Kimi Antonelli will lose his chance of winning ‘multiple’ titles if he ever moves to Ferrari

After a report emerged that suggested Ferrari owners have issued an internal ‘directive’ to sign Antonelli at all costs, F1 fans gave their verdict on a possible partnership between the two Italian parties.

On F1 Oversteer’s official Facebook page, the sentiments regarding Antonelli making a switch from silver to red were met with an overriding sense of fear, given the Scuderia’s track record in recent years.

One fan wrote, “Noooo! An Italian driving for Ferrari… the pressure would be too great. Let him have 5 years of free racing before a move,” while another also urged Antonelli to remain in Brackley, commenting, “Don’t do it, Kimi! You’ll lose your chance of multiple WDCs.”

A separate Facebook user commented under the post, “Good luck with that. I’m pretty damn sure Mercedes won’t allow that anytime soon.”

The news also reached Reddit, where F1 fans continued to express their dismay at the possibility of Antonelli joining the Ferrari ranks.

One fan highlighted how the pressure of being an Italian driver at the Scuderia would simply be too much, commenting, “The pressure of being an Italian driver driving for Ferrari would be too much for anyone. It would ruin his life.”

Even Italian F1 fans are sceptical about the idea of it, with another fan writing, “I am Italian, and it would be a dream to have an Italian champion with Ferrari. But at the same time, I am 99.9% sure Ferrari will ruin his mental health and shatter the fans’ dreams.”

A final fan pointed out their hopes of Antonelli only switching sides once he has written his name in the history books at Mercedes.

They wrote, “He’ll go there for the cultural significance, but when he does, it’ll probably be the last seat he’ll ever hold. He’ll be 10 championship titles deep and eligible for senior discounts.”
