Max Verstappen has again threatened to leave Formula 1 in 2026, but fans are growing tired of his complaints about the regulations.

The Red Bull driver has said that the proposed changes from the FIA, which would see the split between internal combustion and electrical power move to 60/40, would keep him in F1 in 2027. But he has quickly changed his tone at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The four-time champion has had a dismal weekend in Montreal, qualifying and finishing seventh in the Sprint. Verstappen blasted ‘horrendous’ issues with the RB22 over his radio, and things did not improve for Grand Prix qualifying.

F1 fans are tired of Max Verstappen threatening to retire in 2026

In Saturday’s qualifying session, the 28-year-old could only manage sixth and will start behind the Mercedes, the McLarens and Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari. Verstappen was furious with the car again, stating that Red Bull had not listened to his setup requests.

Verstappen says GT3 racing is ‘2,000 times better’ than F1, having recently competed in the Nurburgring 24 Hours. It is the latest swipe he has taken at the 2026 regulation changes.

Verstappen threatened to retire from F1 back in Shanghai, and he reignited discussion about his future in Canada, saying that the current rules are ‘mentally not doable’ to continue with.

But fans on X (formerly Twitter) are not impressed with Verstappen’s sudden change of mood, and they are growing tired of his threats to retire.

One fan called him a ‘cry baby’, while another said: “Can’t win, says he’s going to leave. Rules changed for him, car looks more competitive, says he’ll stay. Has a poor weekend, says he’s going to leave again. This guy is a total baby.”

One user wrote: “Lmaooo this guy all he does is whine, bros barely beating Hadjar and complaining about regs.” Verstappen was only 28 thousandths of a second quicker than his teammate in qualifying on Saturday.

Max Verstappen makes a U-Turn on his recent retirement stance. Do you think he said it to force Formula 1’s hand?

“Lol gets one bad car and throws all his toys out the pram. What a sore loser he is! Grow up,” said another fan.

Another user told Verstappen to ‘leave or adapt’, while one said that the sport should not tailor the rules to his demands.

They wrote: “F1 shouldn’t be built around 1 man, the rules are the rules and any driver that don’t like it can move on and the fans that don’t like don’t have to watch the sport. But no driver should feel entitled enough to expect rule changes to suit themselves.”
