Oliver Bearman is getting his second taste of Formula 1 after he was called up to Haas for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Kevin Magnussen is serving a race ban for picking up 12 penalty points after he collected two for an incident with Pierre Gasly at Monza. The Dane becomes the first driver to receive a suspension after Romain Grosjean back in 2012.
For Baku, Haas opted to bring up Bearman from Formula 2 for his first full Formula 1 weekend. The Brit will join the team permanently in 2025 alongside Esteban Ocon, but team principal Ayao Komatsu has ruled out Bearman replacing Magnussen for the remainder of the 2024 season.
The 19-year-old made his F1 debut with Ferrari back in Jeddah, finishing seventh in place of Carlos Sainz after he was diagnosed with appendicitis. Former Haas boss Guenther Steiner warned Bearman will face a reality check at Baku as he steps into slower machinery than his last F1 outing.
But despite that fact, Bearman again showed his talent with an impressive performance in qualifying.
Fans laud over Oliver Bearman after out qualifying Nico Hulkenberg in Baku

Following his first Friday sessions in F1, Bearman lauded his teammate Nico Hulkenberg for the help the German has given him to improve.
And the Brit certainly took that on board as he qualified 11th for the race – the same position he managed in Jeddah with Ferrari – and out qualified Hulkenberg, who could only manage 14th.

While Bearman was visibly frustrated with the result as he called himself an ‘idiot’ over the radio, fans were quick to praise the young talent for his efforts on Haas’ X account.
One user highlighted that the Brit’s position in F1 next year is justified as they wrote: “Ollie proving he deserves the seat next year!”
Another echoed those feelings: “Ollie did so well can’t wait for next season.”
One fan said: “Ollie is special,” while another praised his first appearance for the American team: “Amazing debut from Ollie!!”
One user pointed out the fact that Bearman has registered the same result in both of his F1 appearances so far: “Ollie you legend, going p11 in a Ferrari and a Haas this season haahah.”
While another was left pleasantly surprised by the Brit’s achievement: “Ollie out qualifying the Hulk Is a surprise, but great driving.”
Oliver Bearman responded strong after his FP3 crash
Bearman bounced back from an unfortunate moment in FP3 as he hit the wall at turn one after misjudging the corner.
The Brit was frustrated to put the VF-24 out of the session, but to qualify in 11th for the race and ahead of his vastly experienced teammate is an impressive accomplishment.
Being just one position away from the top 10, Bearman is in a good position to score more points in F1 and add to the six he scored with Ferrari earlier in the season.
Heading into the race, Bearman has more points than the driver he is replacing in Magnussen, his future teammate Ocon, as well as both Sauber and Williams’ drivers.
