Formula 1 fans have been blown away by the sheer size of the slot gap with Red Bull’s Macarena rear wing after its debut in practice at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix on Friday.

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc set the pace during FP1 at Hard Rock Stadium, but Red Bull got the spotlight as Max Verstappen sealed second. Leclerc set a 1:29.310 lap to pip Verstappen by 0.297 seconds for the fastest lap, ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri with a 0.448s deficit.

Before travelling to Florida, Red Bull had not ranked inside the top three in any session since qualifying for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in March when Isack Hadjar secured P3, on his debut for the team. The RB22 rarely showed a lot of pace during the early rounds.

Red Bull utilised the break since the Japanese Grand Prix in March to refine upgrades for the RB22 that they unveiled during practice in Miami on Friday. Only Ferrari with 11 and Cadillac with nine revealed more updates during FP1 in Miami than Red Bull, as they revealed seven.

Many fans’ eyes were immediately drawn to the size of the slot gap on Red Bull’s Macarena rear wing after Verstappen and Hadjar engaged straight mode. While Ferrari’s version turns the upper flap, Red Bull use an actuator to rotate it to create a considerably wider opening.

As soon as Hadjar was caught on camera using Red Bull’s Macarena rear wing, one fan said on Reddit: “The gap looks even bigger than Ferrari’s!” Another fan claimed: “That looks like a rather larger gap compared to Ferrari’s.” One F1 fan also simply noted: “That’s a big hole.”

Red Bull’s slot gap appears to be almost twice the size of Ferrari’s, for which the Scuderia’s rear wing rotates the upper flap through an actuator fitted inside the end plate. The size of the gap led one F1 fan to say: “We got a gaper!” Another fan also said: “God, it’s massive!”

One fan also suggested: “Gap so large that Fernando Alonso is going to put his car in there!” Another Formula 1 fan also noted: “It seems they found a way to make it even quicker and more efficient than Ferrari’s.” One fan even suggested: “That’s very close to no wing at all!”

Ferrari were the first squad to design and track-test a Macarena rear wing at the second pre-season test in Bahrain this February. But Ferrari’s Macarena rear wing created balance issues when they later trialled it in practice at the Chinese Grand Prix during round two this March.

However, Ferrari have a significantly revised Macarena rear wing in Miami after they trialled a new actuator during their filming day at Monza amid the break in the 2026 F1 season. The Scuderia put their actuator in the endplate, whereas Red Bull’s is in the middle of their wing.
