F1 fans have blasted Charles Leclerc following his crash in qualifying at the Barcelona Grand Prix, with the overwhelming majority questioning whether the Ferrari star truly is world champion material.

The eight-time Grand Prix winner crashed out of qualifying for the second race weekend in a row, bringing his total crash count over the past eight days to a remarkable three.

Race control threw out a red flag during the grid’s initial laps in Q3 after cameras cut to Leclerc’s SF-26 in the barriers at turn four. It was quite the impact, with the medical car being called to the scene of the incident due to G-force readings exceeding 25G.

Martin Brundle put the incident down to total driver error during his verdict for Sky Sports F1, identifying that the Ferrari ace may have gotten too ‘trigger-happy’ on the throttle, which sent him careering into the barriers.

F1 fans say crash-prone Charles Leclerc will ‘never’ be world champion

After witnessing the crash, F1 fans were just as brutal during their initial reaction to the incident. Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), with the overwhelming sentiment being one of pessimism for Leclerc’s future title aspirations.

It’s a red flag in Barcelona Q3 after Charles Leclerc’s crash! 😓 What would be considered a successful recovery from here?

One highlighted Leclerc’s status as one of the best drivers on the F1 grid, theorising, “When do we start to have a serious conversation about him?”

A separate fan outlined how Leclerc’s crash-prone nature always leaves him short-handed: “Charles Leclerc is so talented, but crashes way too often. He was never on Verstappen’s level. He ain’t on Lando’s level either. You can’t be a champion, crashing that often.”

Another agreed with the sentiments, saying, “Charles Leclerc will never be world champion, LOL. He can’t be consistent over a 24-race season. Russell and Norris, in terms of consistency over a season, are better.”

Leclerc recently signed an extension to his existing contract with Ferrari, and hopes to be able to end the Scuderia’s nearly 20-year-long drought for a world title.

However, one fan finds the prospect amusing, posting, “Some people genuinely think Charles Leclerc will one day be a world champion? They make me laugh.”

Another thinks the narrative of Leclerc being a world champion needs to stop, commenting, “We have to stop with Leclerc, he’ll never, ever be world champion,” while a separate user made their feelings clear in little words: “Leclerc WILL NEVER EVER Be a World Champion.”

Charles Leclerc was ‘ashamed’ of himself after crashing out of Barcelona GP qualifying

Leclerc carved a forlorn figure in the media pen following his shunt, and outlined just how ashamed he was to be speaking to the press after yet another crash in the qualifying format.

He told the microphones of Sky Sports F1 (16:53 12/06), “Yeah, I’m okay, thank you, but I just feel very much ashamed to be here after a crash like that. I released the brakes earlier, and I tried to carry more speed than on the previous lap.

“I think we were close to being the fastest car at every corner, except for turn four; I knew it was a weakness. I knew that I had to make everything perfect for that lap, and I tried, but obviously, I regret it now.

“Again, I feel very much ashamed. I mean, the last two races in Canada and Monaco, I had a very tricky configuration to deal with, and that didn’t make it easy. Monaco ended the way it ended, and that was very difficult to accept, knowing that I could do little with it.

But this weekend, there was none of that. The car was great, the feeling with the car was amazing. But I didn’t deliver, and if anything, it’s a lot worse than that. I put it into the wall, so there are no excuses.”
