Lewis Hamilton is known to be one of the most introverted drivers on the Formula 1 grid. But Pierre Gasly is one of the few competitors with whom he seems to share a close relationship.
Speaking to ESPN in 2020, Gasly said he’d grown closer to Hamilton through online gaming sessions. He called him a ‘very special guy’ and ‘probably’ the best driver in F1 history.
The Frenchman is approaching 150 race starts in Formula 1, but he’s rarely had the opportunity to compete with Hamilton. He’s spent the majority of his career at midfield teams Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri and Alpine.

He did have a brief stint at Red Bull in the first half of the 2019 season, but that came at the height of Mercedes’ dominance. It’s far easier to maintain a friendship with a driver who’s not a direct rival.
Gasly has scored four podiums so far in F1, most memorably at the 2020 Italian GP when he earned a sensational victory. That win came at the expense of Hamilton, who was in control before coming in when the pit lane was closed, triggering an automatic penalty.
Formula 1 fans spot Lewis Hamilton ‘drag race’ photo on Pierre Gasly’s wall
Gasly recently posted a selfie on Instagram that showed him donning a face mask. But fans were more interested in what was on display on the wall behind him.
The 28-year-old has framed his race suits from AlphaTauri and forerunners Toro Rosso, but also has a still from the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. Gasly scored his first-ever podium in that race after a dramatic ‘drag race’ to the line with Hamilton.
He finished fractionally of the Mercedes man ahead to bag P2 behind Max Verstappen. Hamilton would be demoted to seventh after a collision with Alex Albon, who had replaced Gasly at Red Bull.
Instagram user corey_tabor25 said the picture ‘goes unnecessarily hard’, while joeleg6sir called it ‘insane’. luca.manchxashvili was also an admirer of the ‘crazy’ photo.
guilherme.diniz.dias sent three fire emojis as he recalled the dash to the chequered flag, and the image also caught the eye of morgantmccooper. Egecherie_ added that ‘everyone is a Lewis fan’.
Pierre Gasly has a ‘special’ relationship with one driver even though they’ve never been teammates
In addition to Hamilton, Gasly has a ‘special bond’ with Charles Leclerc, another frontrunning driver. The two drivers have been previously been seen attending Wimbledon together, as well as a Taylor Swift concert in Italy.
Former Sauber strategist Ruth Buscombe says the Leclerc and Gasly friendship is ‘beautiful’. The Monegasque started his F1 career at Sauber, one of Toro Rosso’s rivals, in 2017.
Things haven’t been as rosy with Esteban Ocon. That partnership will come to an end in 2025 as Ocon leaves Alpine to join Haas.
Gasly launched a subtle dig at Ocon in a podcast appearance, hinting that he was more committed to preserving harmony in the team. It seems that many of his colleagues agreed.
