‘Extremely talented’ 26-year-old F1 driver could now end up stuck in driver market ‘no man’s land’

You have to be extremely talented to reach Formula 1, but being successful at the highest level of motorsport also requires a little bit of luck.

There are plenty of very good drivers who have spent years in F1 without ever achieving their full potential because they’ve not been in the right car – just ask Fernando Alonso about his second spell at McLaren.

Speaking on the Inside The Piranha Club Podcast, journalist Rebecca Clancy has shared her concerns about one driver’s current predicament.

Both Alpine drivers will be wondering if there’s another seat available for them in 2025 given their horrendous start to the season and the downward trajectory the team have been on over the past few years.

Sauber and Williams are both yet to get off the mark, but there are other teams who are underperforming in 2024 as well.

Mercedes have once again shown that they don’t fully understand the current ruleset and George Russell is in danger of going through another season without being able to fight at the very front of the grid.

After surviving three seasons at Williams before getting his chance in the Silver Arrows, he’ll be hoping the very short spell he enjoyed at the front of the grid isn’t a one-off in his career.

George Russell in danger of being stuck in ‘no man’s land’ at Mercedes

George Russell arrived in Formula 1 with one of the best records in junior formulas in recent times.

He came through the ranks in an extremely competitive age group, fighting against the likes of Lando Norris and Alex Albon.

However, that didn’t stop him from winning GP3 and F2 in back-to-back years, a feat which has since been matched by Oscar Piastri.

Russell was part of the Mercedes Junior Team and with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas already set for the 2019 campaign, he was in danger of missing out on an F1 drive.

Williams came to the rescue, although he was driving the slowest car on the grid, except for one outing in the Silver Arrows in 2020 as a replacement for Hamilton where he was cruelly denied his first victory.

Russell was finally brought in to replace Bottas in 2022, but that coincided with Mercedes’s domination of the sport coming to an end.

Aside from a fantastic race in Brazil where he earned his first – and so far, only – Formula 1 victory, he’s had to fight tooth and nail just to finish on the podium.

George Russell must be ready to take over from Lewis Hamilton in 2025

Talking about Mercedes and their 26-year-old driver, Clancy said: “I absolutely agree with you, they are in a big mess.

“It feels like this has suddenly been sprung on them but surely this has been an issue for a while and as you say, they’ve had brain drain, they’ve been heavily poached as you would expect.

“Where do they go from here as they don’t seem to be hiring?”

Talking about Russell, Clancy added: “I think those big decisions are also starting to be from George Russell because talking of concern, I am concerned about him that he’s an extremely talented driver, won F3 and F2 consecutively, only the second driver to do that after Charles Leclerc.

“He’s extremely talented as we have seen but he is in danger of being in a bit of a no man’s land shall we say?

“Constantly in the wrong car at the wrong time.”

With Hamilton heading for Ferrari in 2025, Russell will be leading Mercedes into the next set of regulations but they’re in danger of being left behind by the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari given how many key personnel they’ve lost in the last couple of years.

The question now is who will be Russell’s teammate next season.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli has completed his first test in an F1 car and Toto Wolff looks keen to get him into the seat for 2025.

However, if the Italian teenager isn’t ready, then a more senior driver will be needed as a stop-gap which might not be the most appealing position on the grid right now.
