Lewis Hamilton finds himself at the top of numerous Formula 1 records but even he has been caught out with numerous crashes at Grand Prix throughout his career.

Hamilton entered the sport with McLaren in 2007. Immediately, the then 22-year-old established himself as a threat at the front as he won his first race at the Canadian Grand Prix, becoming the youngest race winner in F1 at that point.

The Brit beat two-time champion Fernando Alonso as his teammate that year and in 2008, Hamilton became the youngest ever F1 world champion – until Sebastian Vettel won the 2010 title – at the Brazilian Grand Prix with a dramatic overtake on Timo Glock at the final corner of the final lap to beat home hero Felipe Massa to the championship by one point.

But after this success, a drop in performance from McLaren and numerous incidents over the next few years denied Hamilton from challenging for the championship. Ultimately, the Brit left the Woking-based squad – who he had been with since he was 13 – and made the switch to Mercedes in 2013.

While his debut season did not bear much improvement, Hamilton and the Silver Arrows proved a lethal combination during the turbo-hybrid era as he won six of the next seven world championships and broke numerous F1 records. He lost the 2016 title to his teammate Nico Rosberg after a tense battle led to the pair coming together several times.

In 2021, Hamilton lost out to Max Verstappen after a dramatic title fight all season. With the two colliding on numerous occasions, the Dutchman secured the title at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi and has since gone on to assert his dominance on the field in the ground effect era, while Mercedes have struggled to compete.

While Hamilton holds the record for the most race wins, pole positions and podiums in F1 history and has proven to have unbelievable racecraft, there have been times where the 39-year-old has got too close and collided with other drivers while battling at the front, even coming together with his teammates on a few occasions.

So with that in mind, F1 Oversteer takes a look back at all of Hamilton’s race-ending crashes in Formula 1…

All of Lewis Hamilton’s race-ending crashes including Nico Rosberg and Max Verstappen incidents

The table below shows every crash that has led to Hamilton recording a Did Not Finish (DNF) in his Formula 1 career to date. The incidents mainly consist of collisions with other drivers while racing, with very few individual errors or faults beyond his control to note.

The most well-known Hamilton crash was his coming together with his teammate Nico Rosberg at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix. Hamilton looked to pass Rosberg on the inside of turn 4 when the German closed the door and sent Hamilton onto the grass, causing him to spin into the back of Rosberg and take them both out of the race.

Neither driver was penalised as the stewards deemed it a racing incident, as Verstappen went on to win his debut race with Red Bull and become the youngest-ever Grand Prix winner.

This incident was not the first or last time Hamilton retired from a collision with a teammate, as he was squeezed into the barriers by his unsighted McLaren teammate Jenson Button at the rain-soaked Canadian Grand Prix in 2011. He came to blows with Rosberg prior to 2016 at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix, when he retired from damage after contact with the German on lap two.

Spa-Francorchamps has not been historically a kind track to Hamilton with five retirements at the circuit caused by crashes. The most dramatic came in 2012 as Romain Grosjean wiped out the pair and several others in a multi-car wreck on the first corner.

In 2021, Hamilton came to blows with Verstappen several times during their tense battle for the title. One of the most intense images in modern F1 history came from the two colliding at the Italian Grand Prix as the Red Bull mounted the Mercedes at the first chicane and was left on top of Hamilton’s halo system.

Lewis Hamilton will be joining Ferrari in 2025 on a multi-year deal

After enduring three years of difficulty at Mercedes in the ground effect era, Hamilton will be making the sensational switch to Ferrari in 2025, uniting the sport’s most decorated driver with the most successful team in F1 history.

The Brit will be replacing Carlos Sainz who will make the move to Williams, while Italian sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli will take the seven-time world champion’s place alongside George Russell at the Silver Arrows.

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is regarded as the biggest driver transfer in F1 history and people up and down the paddock and around the world are eager to see how the Brit will perform. Rob Smedley is already expecting Hamilton to beat teammate Charles Leclerc when he joins the Maranello squad next year.

Not only will Hamilton bring a wealth of experience and brilliant racecraft to Ferrari, but also large amounts of sponsorship and marketing opportunities. There has been the ‘odd’ rumour that Hamilton could sponsor himself at Ferrari, with rumblings that the Italian team could strike a deal with the Brit’s non-alcohol Tequila brand Almave.
