Eddie Jordan says he would replace Sergio Perez with £6m-a-year driver if he was Red Bull team boss

Red Bull Racing face a dilemma heading into the final three races of the 2024 F1 campaign and the winter break before next season.

Sergio Perez currently sits on 151 points after 20 race weekends this season, leaving him 8th in the Drivers’ Championship.

The Mexican driver started the season with a trio of 2nd-place finishes and 3rd-place in China as he looked on course to potentially secure another one-two finish alongside Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen.

Unfortunately, his season has unravelled since that race, failing to finish on the podium since the Sprint Race in Miami.

He’s slowly slipped down the standings and now sits bottom out of all of the drivers among the top class of Formula 1.

Perez is even behind both Mercedes drivers despite Lewis Hamilton describing their car as the worst it’s ever been during his decade with the manufacturer, and with Verstappen about to win his fourth world championship, the difference in their performances is stark.

Unsurprisingly, Red Bull are considering dropping Perez ahead of next season.

Eddie Jordan was speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast and suggested that if he was in Christian Horner’s position, he would be doing everything he could to sign Carlos Sainz.

The £6m-a-year has already committed his future to Williams for 2025 after being dropped to make space for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari next year.

Eddie Jordan would hire Carlos Sainz to replace Sergio Perez if he was Red Bull boss

Jordan was asked by a fan about whether he thinks Sainz could replace Perez at Red Bull and said: “Do you know what I love about the Anchors [fans of his podcast], they think things differently to us.

“It’s what should happen [Sainz replacing Perez] and if I was the boss of Red Bull, please remember that Carlos Sainz came into the Red Bull family many, many years ago.

“So it’s not someone just coming in from Ferrari or just coming in from the cold.

“He’s coming in from the fact that he was a Red Bull driver.

“Which is what I said to Carlos Sr., you never know what door is actually going to open for you because Formula 1 is full of intrigue, it’s full of excitement, it’s full of the unknown, you cannot believe what is likely to possibly happen.

“And that is one of the scenarios that could just happen but it’s unlikely at the moment.”

How Christian Horner feels about hiring Carlos Sainz to replace Sergio Perez

Perez may be concerned about how watertight his Red Bull contract is given the pressure on his performances is unrelenting right now.

The more scrutiny on each of Perez’s races, the more he seems to struggle compared to his teammate.

While Verstappen was showing off his world champion credentials in Brazil, Perez was recovering from an early spin and failing to pass Hamilton and Liam Lawson to score points.

Horner has ruled out a move for Sainz but may be regretting not making an offer for the 30-year-old when he was still a free agent for 2025.

He was by far the strongest available candidate in the driver’s market and now Red Bull may have to take a risk on Franco Colapinto to solve their line-up conundrum.
