McLaren were once again celebrating this season as Lando Norris produced a masterclass at Max Verstappen’s home race to slightly increase the pressure on the triple-world champion and Red Bull.
The Dutch Grand Prix has been dominated by Verstappen since its reintroduction to the calendar in 2021, but Lando Norris strolled to victory once he passed the 26-year-old during his first stint.
McLaren had by far the fastest car at Zandvoort but could only celebrate one of their drivers finishing on the podium.
It shows the progress that McLaren have made this season that Oscar Piastri will feel that the Dutch Grand Prix was a weekend to forget despite securing a 4th place finish.

Piastri was surprised by how fast Ferrari were at Zandvoort but even when he quickly caught up to the back of Charles Leclerc, he couldn’t find a way past the Monegasque driver.
The Australian couldn’t quite nail his qualifying lap either and after a poor start, his race was compromised from there.
Speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast, former team owner Eddie Jordan was furious with McLaren for how they managed Piastri’s race.

It’s safe to say that strategy hasn’t necessarily been McLaren’s strong point this year.
The timing of their pit stops and subsequent tyre choices cost them victory at Silverstone and the way they managed Norris and Piastri’s races in Hungary caused confusion as they secured a one-two finish.
Jordan once again believes that McLaren made a serious error with Piastri’s pit-stop strategy and he should have comfortably finished on the podium as a result.
Eddie Jordan furious with McLaren’s strategy for Oscar Piastri at the Dutch Grand Prix
Talking about the Australian’s race weekend at Zandvoort, Jordan said: “They screwed him up!
“McLaren screwed him up again, they left him out far too long and you [David Coulthard] know that and they’ve done that before and then the stacking at Silverstone.

“Look, as far as I’m concerned and there’s no harm because I think Piastri has won his race, he now has the knowledge, he knows how to win and what it’s like to win but some of the things are playing absolutely away from him.
“And that is that I think they made a very serious mistake about the way they pitted him. They let it go far, far too late.”
Oscar Piastri pinpoints what ‘ruined his race’ at the Dutch Grand Prix
There are many things McLaren will want Piastri to learn from Norris during their time together as teammates.
Norris is one of the fastest drivers on the grid and his one-lap pace and tyre management are attributes that Piastri should look to inherit.
However, Norris is also incredibly self-critical and while there are positives to this, it also means he puts himself under more pressure each weekend.
Piastri was disappointed after the Dutch Grand Prix and unsurprisingly sets himself incredibly high standards.
McLaren are likely to eventually prioritise Norris over Piastri if he continues to close the gap to Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship.
Given it’s only Piastri’s second season in F1, he can’t have too many complaints about having to play the team game at this stage of the campaign.
However in the view of Jordan, if McLaren had figured out their strategy better across the season but particularly in Zandvoort, Piastri may be much closer to his teammate in the Drivers’ Championship.
