David Croft shares the one change he’d make to F1 to make things ‘a lot more interesting’

Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft has suggested getting rid of blue flags to make the sport more exciting.

Croft was doing a Q & A on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast as Formula 1 continues its mid-season break.

It’s not exactly been the most competitive season of F1 at the front of the grid.

Red Bull have yet to be knocked off the top step of the podium and are currently on the longest winning streak in the sport’s history.

The likes of McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin have battled to be best of the rest.

However, no one looks like they’re going to get close to Max Verstappen this season.

The worst four teams on the grid are also pretty close and have provided some great battles.

Their attempts to race each other are occasionally interrupted by the fastest cars coming up to lap them.

Croft believes that F1 should do away with blue flags to make things more interesting.

The fastest cars should have no trouble getting past the back markers if they’re quick enough.

It would also create some much-needed jeopardy that might see Red Bull finally give up a top spot.

Croft recommends removing blue flags from F1

Asked what changes he’d make to Formula 1 if given the opportunity, Croft said: “I think a simplification of the rules because they’re getting a bit too complicated.

“We need to find a way to simplify it and just put the show first occasionally.

“Ban blue flags because if you’re good enough to be leading a race, you’re good enough to pass a driver who’s not leading the race because they’re last without them having to jump out of the way.

“It might make things a lot more interesting as well. You could do that without any investment in the sport, without any engineering challenges whatsoever.

“With the wave of a flag, you could get rid of something I just think is unnecessary.

“Other motorsport categories don’t have blue flags.”

Croft’s suggestion for blue flags would certainly be welcomed by some of the teams on the grid looking to catch Red Bull.

Even Sergio Perez might support the move if it meant he could get a bit closer to his teammate.

There are safety reasons for them, but as Croft says, the fastest cars should have no problem overtaking back markers.

Something needs to be done to stop Red Bull continuing their complete dominance of the sport for much longer.
