Lewis Hamilton’s desire to continue in Formula 1 has been called into question as he takes a psychological battering at Ferrari. Hamilton only has one more race to avoid the first podium-less season of his F1 career.
But recent results suggest that this is highly unlikely. Jamie Chadwick says Ferrari are a midfield team right now, and even if they are fast enough at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Hamilton may not be able to capitalise.
He has been knocked out in Q1 in each of his last three qualifying sessions, and hasn’t finished higher than seventh on any of his last six starts. Teammate Charles Leclerc is responsible for all seven of Ferrari’s podiums this year.
Sum up Lewis Hamilton’s debut season at Ferrari in one word…
Ferrari are concerned about Hamilton’s performances and are facing calls to move on from the seven-time world champion after just one year, with academy driver Oliver Bearman impressing at Haas.
David Croft says Lewis Hamilton will be ‘energised’ at the start of 2026
Hamilton recently described his first Ferrari season as a ‘nightmare’ and suggested that he wasn’t even looking forward to next year.
Sky Sports commentator David Croft has spoken to Hamilton and those around him. He’s confident that the British driver will be ‘determined’ again at the start of 2026.
Ted Kravitz fears that Hamilton doesn’t like the 2026 Ferrari after trying it on the simulator, but there is hope that he will benefit from the end of the ground-effect era. His driving style appears to be at odds with the current generation of cars.
The 2026 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be Lewis Hamilton’s final F1 race – discuss.
“From everything I hear – I speak to Lewis’ team, and I’ve spoken to Lewis himself – he’s not quitting,” Croft said on the F1 Show.
“He’s coming back next year, and he will be more energised, more focused and more determined to put this season behind him and give his best for Ferrari. Now, if Ferrari have got the package, we’ll see the results. But who knows?”
Damon Hill says Lewis Hamilton has another championship in him
Ralf Schumacher says Hamilton ‘can’t change his driving’ style at the age of 40. That could prevent him from adapting to the new machinery next year.
Former title rival Max Verstappen also believes age is a problem for Hamilton, suggesting he definitely won’t get any faster from here but teammate Leclerc (28) is continuing to improve.
Damon Hill still thinks Hamilton can win another title and become the sport’s first eight-time champion. But Hill knows that everything is riding on Ferrari’s 2026 car being a contender.
