David Coulthard suggests one F1 driver sounded ‘very frustrated’ immediately after the Singapore GP

The 2025 Singapore Grand Prix won’t rank highly when it comes to reviewing every Formula 1 race this season.

Mercedes driver George Russell will look back on the Singapore Grand Prix very fondly after taking pole position and leading expertly from the front.

Max Verstappen once again put a dent in Oscar Piastri’s lead in the drivers’ championship, with the Australian’s clash with McLaren teammate Lando Norris the biggest talking point on Sunday.

Andrea Stella has made promises to Piastri’s camp after his request for Norris to return third place to him fell on deaf ears after their clash on the opening lap.

Piastri has subsequently been linked with Ferrari for the 2027 season, but there’s a long way to go before the championship leader decides he needs to leave McLaren.

Elsewhere on the grid, Nico Hulkenberg was left annoyed as he brought out the only yellow flag during the race when he spun behind Franco Colapinto’s early-braking Alpine.

Isack Hadjar was irate with another power unit issue at Racing Bulls, and Yuki Tsunoda had another race to forget for Red Bull.

However, former driver David Coulthard noticed that another driver sounded particularly ‘frustrated’ at the end of the Singapore Grand Prix, despite an extremely positive result.

David Coulthard says Fernando Alonso sounded ‘very frustrated’ after the Singapore Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso crossed the line in eighth for Aston Martin in Singapore, but that doesn’t tell the full story.

Alonso was irate with Lewis Hamilton as his late brake issues saw him cutting plenty of corners to stay ahead of his old rival.

However, the 44-year-old was already upset at this point after a slow pit stop, leading to a now viral quote about threatening to turn off the radio if his engineer kept speaking to him during the race.

This was put to Coulthard during Channel 4’s post-race coverage, and he explained: “He sort of lives a life with the mantra of the little book of war of the Japanese warriors.

“I’m not sure if that’s one of them! But if it were written in the modern time, it would be a quote from him.

“I think he was just very frustrated at that point in the race.”

How Fernando Alonso feels about his Formula 1 future ahead of the 2026 season

Much has been made of the fact that Alonso is the oldest driver on the grid and made his debut before several of this year’s rookies were even born.

Alonso was asked about ageing better than his rivals, and his performance in Singapore showed he’s far from being left behind by some of the sport’s top stars.

The upcoming regulation changes are likely to have a direct impact on whether Alonso retires at the end of 2026 or not.

Pedro de la Rosa thinks Alonso hasn’t reached his peak yet, but Lawrence Stroll will be keeping a very close eye on the driver market next year with plenty of big names considering their futures.

Alonso has been stuck on 32 wins for more than a decade, and if he can add just one more victory to his tally, it would justify his return to Formula 1 back in 2021.

Aston Martin are hoping the arrival of Honda and Adrian Newey will make that happen, but only time will tell how the pecking order is going to look next year.
