Lewis Hamilton’s first win for Ferrari prompted him to take a swipe at Ralf Schumacher’s Formula 1 career, which David Coulthard says is ‘unusual’ for the seven-time champion.
Hamilton finally claimed his first Ferrari win at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. It came after a disastrous 2025 campaign, which drew heavy criticism and raised doubts about his future.
Coulthard was ‘uncomfortable’ talking about Hamilton before his return to form in 2026, as he did not believe that he would win another race. The 41-year-old has proved his doubters wrong this year, with Schumacher being one of the most vocal.
What did the Barcelona Grand Prix reveal about Formula 1 in 2026?

Schumacher had been calling for Hamilton to retire from F1 during his struggles in 2025. It was suggested that such an outcome could be possible, but the Brit has repeatedly rubbished that, saying that he intends to stay in the sport.
Following his victory in Barcelona, which puts him 41 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli, Coulthard saw Hamilton giving an interview to Sky Germany. It is unclear what Schumacher said to him, but it prompted the 41-year-old to point out the German’s lack of success in F1.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard says it is ‘unusual’ for Hamilton to enter such a discussion in the paddock.
