Daniel Ricciardo likely drove the last laps in his Formula 1 career when he crossed the line at the end of the Singapore Grand Prix.
Senior management at Red Bull decided to exercise an option in Liam Lawson’s contract which expired at the end of September, with it becoming clear that the Australian was unlikely to add to the points total.
Visa CashApp RB is currently tight battle for sixth in the Constructors’ Championship with Haas, with them just three points ahead heading into the final six races.
Lawson has been drafted in with the hope of scoring more points and potentially auditioning for a seat alongside Max Verstappen at the senior Red Bull team in the future.
As for Ricciardo, his time in the F1 paddock might be up according to journalist Ben Hunt when speaking on the JA on F1 podcast.
Daniel Ricciardo will not attend the US Grand Prix despite rumours over sponsorship
Ricciardo’s send-off was criticised by former F1 driver Damon Hill for effectively not informing fans or media in the run-up to Singapore, despite knowing the plan after the Azerbaijan GP.
Part of the reason was speculated to be RB’s partnerships with American companies CashApp and Visa, who had commercial ties with Ricciardo that extended to the US GP.
“You got the impression when he was walking through the paddock [in Singapore] that this was it,” said Hunt.
“The last chance. I understand that he won’t be in the paddock in Austin, which is a shame because he’s popular in the US.”
