Damon Hill has shared what he told Ayrton Senna after the legendary Brazilian broke his father Graham Hill’s record for most Monaco Grand Prix wins.

Winning a race in the principality is one of the greatest honours in Formula 1, with Max Verstappen the latest driver to take the chequered flag on the French Riviera.

Speaking to the official Formula 1 website, Damon Hill was reflecting on his father’s exceptional career in motor racing.

Formula 1 has a history of father and son combinations competing in the sport.

Surnames like Villeneuve, Schumacher and Verstappen are all synonymous with F1.

However, only two pairs have ever won the Drivers’ Championship – Keke and Nico Rosberg and Graham and Damon Hill.

Graham Hill won the Drivers’ Championship in 1962 and 1968, winning the Indianapolis 500 between his two titles.

He’s the only driver to have achieved both of those accolades as well as winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, known as the Triple Crown.

Graham Hill was also infamously quick in Monaco, so much so that he was once dubbed Mr Monaco.

However, Hill’s Monaco record was finally broken by Senna in 1993 as he won his sixth race on the tricky street circuit with McLaren.

He was racing against Graham’s son Damon at the time who was with Williams and had the unusual number 0 on his car that year.

Hill Jnr. Has now shared what he told Senna after he broke his incredible record that weekend.

Hill shares Senna message after Monaco record

Senna started third on the grid in 1993, behind Alain Prost’s Williams and Michael Schumacher’s Benetton.

Hill was alongside Senna on the grid, but the Brazilian drove incredibly, winning the race by 52 seconds ahead of his nearest rival to cement his Monaco legacy.

Speaking about the events after the race, Hill wrote: “In 1993, when I was racing with Williams at Monaco, Ayrton Senna beat my dad’s [Monaco wins] record and I said to him, “I think if my dad was here, he would be absolutely delighted to congratulate you on beating his record because it stood for such a long time.”

Senna was truly magnificent around Monaco and sadly the race he broke Graham Hill’s record was his last outing around the Monte Carlo circuit.

Damon’s message to the sensational Brazilian showed what a brilliant competitor he was but unfortunately, he could never match his father’s achievements and secure a win on the street circuit.

The closest he came was when he won his only Drivers’ Championship in 1996.

Hill took eight victories that year and when Michael Schumacher retired after an accident on the first lap looked set to finally add a win in Monaco to his record.

However, an engine failure on lap 40 denied him that chance and handed Olivier Panis the only victory of his Formula 1 career.
