Damon Hill has reacted to the news that Adrian Newey is set to join Aston Martin from the 2025 season onwards, in a multi-year deal that sees him becoming a shareholder within the team.
It is a massive blow to Red Bull who are facing problems of their own in the second half of 2024, but also a sign of intent from Aston Martin who look poised to become title challengers in 2026.
Adrian Newey joins the team in what will reportedly be a £30m-a-year deal, while billionaire team owner Lawrence Stroll has invested heavily in the team’s facilities.
The rule changes for the 2026 season will be one of F1’s biggest in recent years, as both the engine and chassis will be overhauled at the same time.
Having previously worked with Newey during his time at Williams, the 1996 F1 World Champion offered his thoughts on the news when speaking on Instagram.

Newey’s expertise and track record for producing title-winning cars make it a massive coup for Aston Martin, especially as the 65-year-old is known for being the best at exploiting new regulations.
Martin Brundle believes Aston Martin will need to avoid the ‘problem’ of the success being attributed to Newey, but believes he will want to being success to the team as his ‘last roll of the dice’ in his F1 career.
Damon Hill, who worked with Newey in the latter years of his career at Williams and drove his car design to championship success in 1996, knows just how much of an influence he has on a team.
In a message on his Instagram stories about the news, Hill simply wrote: “Well done Aston.”

Adrian Newey impressed by Lawrence Stroll
After announcing he would be leaving Red Bull at the end of the year, several teams up and down the F1 paddock attempted to get Newey’s signature.
Ferrari came close after holding several discussions but due to his demands, team principal Frederic Vasseur was unwilling to put pen to paper in the end.

Both Alpine and Williams were also chasing for Newey, but in the end he settled on Aston Martin due to the investments made by Stroll.
The team has changed a lot since he took over the Silverstone-based squad in 2018 and now looks poised to fight for titles with both Newey and Alonso onboard for the future.
