After nearly three years of waiting to stand on the top step of a Formula 1 podium, Lewis Hamilton finally added the 104th win to his tally.

Lewis Hamilton became the first driver to ever win an F1 race nine times by taking the chequered flag at the British Grand Prix, holding on from a late charge from Max Verstappen and benefitting from some incorrect strategy calls from McLaren.

He also saw his Mercedes teammate George Russell unexpectedly retire from the race with a water system issue which took some of the pressure off him but also removed his rear gunner from the race and would have provided some doubt as to whether his car would suffer from the same issue.

Unsurprisingly, there’s been a huge outpouring of emotion from the fans and Hamilton was in tears in the car and during his post-race interview as he came to terms with his achievement.

Former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill took to social media to react to Lewis Hamilton winning another fantastic British Grand Prix.

He’s produced some unbelievable performances at Silverstone in the past but will include this victory among one of his best in front of his home crowd.

Posting on X after the race, Hill said: “Epic. I’m lost for words. Lewis [Hamilton] is a total mega Champ.”

He then added and referenced Hamilton’s father: “I feel so privileged to have seen this story from very early days.

“Today was the culmination of a lot of blood sweat and tears. Amazing. So happy. What a great thing to see the return of the GOAT. Well done Dad.”

Hill’s praise of Hamilton wasn’t done there as he then took to Instagram and said: “Mind blown. What a legend.”

An emotional Hamilton was quick to praise Mercedes for their hard work not just throughout the race weekend but also in recent weeks, with the team going from fourth-fastest on the grid to in the mix with McLaren and Red Bull in a very short amount of time.

He told his race engineer Pete Bonnington how much he loved him over the team radio, a combination that has produced countless wins and world championships over the years.

With Hamilton’s relationship with Mercedes set to come to an end in a dozen races time, Hamilton couldn’t have asked for a better Grand Prix to have added what could be his last victory with the team to his tally.

Mercedes are suddenly looking like a team who can regularly compete at the very front of the grid as their performance in qualifying showed.

While Russell has been faster over one lap, Hamilton’s experience and ultimately the skill that’s won him seven world championships showed once it started raining.

Russell’s car may not have been set up quite as optimally as Hamilton’s for racing in the wet, but Hamilton quickly closed the gap and then overtook his teammate.

Both McLaren then passed Hamilton but Mercedes got their strategy right throughout the race while the team in papaya made several crucial errors.

Hamilton went onto the soft tyres, which almost felt like a gamble given how long he needed to run them for to reach the end of the race.

And even though Norris pitted a lap later, he couldn’t keep them alive for as long as Hamilton and when Verstappen passed the McLaren it looked like he might be on for an unlikely victory.

But Hamilton’s class prevailed and after nearly 1000 days of waiting, he returned to the top step of the podium once again.
