Damon Hill reacted with ‘no way’ after seeing McLaren below Aston Martin in a crucial Formula 1 leaderboard.
After winning back-to-back world titles, McLaren have endured a tough start to the 2026 F1 season.
In Australia, Oscar Piastri crashed on his way to the grid, with Lando Norris only finishing in fifth place.
McLaren’s woes got worse in China as both Piastri and Norris failed to start the race due to an electrical problem.
Things improved in Japan and Miami, with both cars finishing in the top five, but in Canada, Norris was forced to retire due to a technical problem, and Piastri finished outside the points.
In truth, McLaren were impacted by a poor strategy call, starting their drivers on intermediate tyres despite the track being dry enough for slicks.
Why do McLaren keep making strategy errors?
Damon Hill says ‘no way’ after seeing McLaren below Aston Martin in crucial F1 leaderboard
As a result of McLaren’s problems in 2026, they have completed the fewest number of Grand Prix laps, with a total of 382, as claimed by The Race.
In comparison, Aston Martin, who have had their own problems to deal with, managed 386.
Ferrari are top of the board with 584, followed by Mercedes (545) and Haas (543).
Taking to social media platform Instagram, 1996 F1 world champion Hill reacted with: “McLaren? No way!”
Despite their mishaps this season, McLaren have still managed to secure three podium finishes and currently sit third in the standings with 106 points.
However, they will need to step up their game as soon as possible if they want to catch the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes.

Andrea Stella labels Canadian Grand Prix a ‘weekend of two halves’
Reacting to what happened in Canada, McLaren team boss Andrea Stella labelled it as a ‘weekend of two halves’.
The Italian stated that McLaren were ‘competitive’ in both the Sprint and qualifying, but the race ultimately went against them.
Stella said to the official McLaren website: “It’s been a Sprint event weekend of two halves. We were competitive in qualifying and the sprint, but the race didn’t go our way.
“We opted for intermediates five minutes before the start because the track was greasy and it was still raining.
“Unfortunately, the rain stopped as soon as the tyres went on, the track dried quickly, and two extra formation laps took away any advantage.
“With Lando we faced a car issue, had to stop to clean the radiators, and then suffered a terminal gearbox problem.”
