Damon Hill has shared what he’s heard about the latest contract offer from Mercedes to star driver Lewis Hamilton.

Hill was speaking to The Independent ahead of the British Grand Prix.

One of the biggest talking points on the grid right now is the future of Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton’s current contract at Mercedes runs until the end of the 2023 season.

The British driver hasn’t recorded a race win since December 2021.

It’s the longest Hamilton has gone through his entire F1 career without standing on the top step of the podium.

Red Bull’s complete dominance of the sport this season means a win looks very unlikely in the near future.

As Hamilton chases a record eighth world title, he may consider switching teams going into next season.

He’s been linked with a move to Ferrari, however, that seems unlikely at this time.

Hill has now shared what he believes is the situation with the latest contract Mercedes have offered Hamilton.

It may explain why there’s been a delay in his future being decided.

Hill explains latest Hamilton contract offer

Asked about the 38-year-old’s future, Hill said: “Any driver who doesn’t know what the options are is missing an opportunity.

“But would he really go to Ferrari? From a strategic point of view, it would be a huge risk to go to Ferrari. Everyone would love to be in red and win, see what happened with Nigel [Mansell].

“It’s a romance really but you’ve got to be cold-blooded about it. He’s not going to go to Red Bull either.

“As I understand it, the contract won’t just be a racing contract – it will be a full Mercedes ambassadorial contract.

“That requires a different board to sign off on it, can’t just be signed off by Toto. There’ll be some board meetings in Germany.”

Unless Hamilton already has some inside information on next season’s car, it seems unlikely he’ll switch teams right now.

The team on the grid worth joining right now is Red Bull and there’s no way he’ll be replacing Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez.

Hill may be right that the Mercedes board need to sign off on the latest Hamilton contract offer.

This weekend might be the best time for Hamilton to tell his fans about his future as he races at his home Grand Prix.
