Damon Hill has been sharing his adulation for Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso and his ability to outthink his rivals.

The most experienced driver on the grid, Fernando Alonso is quietly going about his job for Aston Martin in a car that should only be scoring minor points every week.

Speaking at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, Damon Hill asked what it was he liked so much about the Spaniard.

Hill thinks Alonso can outthink all his F1 rivals

At the age of 42, many Formula 1 fans would imagine that Alonso could be entering the twilight of his career.

And while he is making noises that he hasn’t quite made his mind up on what he’s going to do next season, it’s hard to imagine a grid without Alonso at the moment.

He may not be too happy to extend his stay at Aston Martin right now when there are potentially better options available.

Max Verstappen’s place at Red Bull is suddenly not as set in cement as it used to be – with Lawrence Stroll interested in his services – and Alonso would surely jump at the chance to drive the fastest car on the grid next year in his place.

Mercedes also need to find a replacement for Lewis Hamilton and if they don’t want to throw Andrea Kimi Antonelli straight into the car then he would be a fantastic option.

Damon Hill has shared the advantage he thinks Alonso has over all of his rivals and it comes down to his superior experience.

Even the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Hulkenberg who fear like they’ve been on the grid forever don’t come close to matching the numbers of Grand Prix he’s taken part in.

Alonso still one of Formula 1’s best drivers

Asked about who he looks out for on the grid, Hill said: “I have a sneaking regard for Fernando Alonso, the old fox, who seems to out-cunning everyone as he is. He’s quite witty.”

As Hill suggests, Alonso has some of the best racecraft in Formula 1 and even rivals like Oscar Piastri have admitted to trying to learn from him.

His teammate Lance Stroll might wish he could pick up a few tips from the Spaniard.

The gap between the two drivers has reached a point that despite his father’s position within the team, conversations may need to be had about his future if Aston Martin have aspirations of winning races and titles.
