Charles Leclerc wants to become a Formula 1 world champion, but he may be starting to realise that leaving Ferrari could be the only way to achieve it.

Since joining the Maranello outfit in 2019, Leclerc has struggled to compete consistently due to underperforming machinery and poor strategic decisions. While he is arguably the best driver on the grid over one lap, he has won just eight races with Ferrari.

In 2025, the Monegasque driver has grabbed six podiums, finishing third last time out in Austin. Ferrari’s pace looked a lot stronger, having been nowhere near the frontrunners for most of the season.

The team are still without a win this season as they focus their attention on the 2026 F1 regulations, where they hope to become a challenger. Leclerc has seen positive signs from the simulator, but it is said that he may be considering his options.

Leclerc has a contract with Ferrari until 2029, but numerous reports have stated that the 28-year-old could make a move on the F1 driver market come 2027. Several teams have already been linked.

Charles Leclerc joining Aston Martin in 2027 has become a ‘hot topic’ amid Ferrari exit rumours

Leclerc may be playing a ‘game’ with Ferrari for 2027. He may not actually be looking to leave, but rather wants to see the team recognise his value.

Nevertheless, teams up and down the paddock have been talking to the Monegasque driver’s camp. Mario Andretti says he would sign Leclerc for Cadillac if he became available in 2027.

According to former F1 driver and pundit Christian Danner, the prospect of the Ferrari driver joining Aston Martin has become a ‘hot topic’. The team would have a seat available if Fernando Alonso decides to retire at the end of 2026.

He said via Motorsport-Magazin: “Where should he go? [It] is of course a correct question. Yes, Aston Martin is of course a hot topic, and if Alonso leaves there after next year, there’s no question about it.

“Honda, Adrian Newey, well that’s already there, it can run smoothly. Who else does he have?

“He can of course also join Mercedes, depending on what happens with Russell or Antonelli. And well, I don’t see him at Red Bull, let’s put it this way.”

What other teams have been linked with Charles Leclerc as he considers Ferrari future?

Leclerc’s camp have spoken to Aston Martin over a potential move. Alonso’s retirement would open the door for him to join the Silverstone squad, who are building an exciting project with Honda and Adrian Newey.

But they are not the only team to have been contacted by the Ferrari star. Leclerc’s manager has spoken to Red Bull, who could be faced with losing Max Verstappen if he decides to activate an exit clause.

Mercedes are another team linked with Leclerc, with the Silver Arrows being secretive about the lengths of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli’s new ‘multi-year’ contracts.

Furthermore, Leclerc could join McLaren, with rumours of a swap with Oscar Piastri coming up in recent weeks. Whether it is just tactics or the Monegasque driver is genuinely considering his future, Ferrari will be desperate to keep their star talent on board.
