Carlos Sainz retains a bond with Ferrari even though they let him go at the end of the 2024 season. He achieved some of his biggest career milestones in their colours.

Sainz took his first-ever pole position at the 2022 British GP and followed it up with a maiden victory. He would win another three races before his departure.

The Spaniard made 88 appearances for the Maranello outfit, which ranks him inside their all-time top 10. He’s also their sixth-highest scoring driver, though changes to the points system have naturally helped.

Ferrari were hugely impressed by Sainz’s conduct in his final season after he was informed in the winter that Lewis Hamilton would be replacing him. He subsequently dropped into the midfield with Williams.

Carlos Sainz hits out at ‘clickbait’ after admitting temptation to ‘tear Ferrari apart’

In a recent interview on the High Performance Podcast, Sainz discussed his inner ‘demons’. In 2024, they were telling him to ‘tear Ferrari apart’.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport pulled out this quote (‘Avrei potuto fare a pezzi la Ferrari’, or ‘I could have cut Ferrari into pieces’) for their Instagram page, but left it in isolation.

In the next photo, they put quote in the full context, which was that Sainz vowed to remain ‘professional’ and give ‘absolutely everything’ until the last race. He saw this as the ‘right’ thing to do.

Sainz clearly felt that his words had been twisted to create controversy. Reacting in the comments, he wrote: “Thanks for the clickbait.”

What Carlos Sainz misses most about racing for Ferrari

Guenther Steiner reckons that Sainz already regrets signing for Williams. James Vowles’ squad made a fantastic start to the season but have only scored five points in the last four races.

Meanwhile, Sauber, another of his suitors, have arguably been the best pound-for-pound team on the grid lately. A podium for Nico Hulkenberg at Silverstone, the team’s first for 13 years, saw them climb to sixth in the constructors’ ahead of Audi’s arrival.

After a Q2 exit at the British GP, Sainz admitted that he missed the fight for pole. He has qualified an impressive sixth three times this year, but that maximises the potential of the FW47.

Last year at Ferrari, he qualified in the top three for eight out of 24 Grands Prix.
