Axed Formula E flop reveals ‘there is a chance’ he gets shock F1 test

Formula E has seen many drivers come from Formula 1 since it launched, including Stoffel Vandoorne and the reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein.

The all-electric series is very competitive and is a unique championship with its focus on street circuits in major cities and a powertrain that needs a distinct driving tenchnique.

The close racing has seen a lot of drivers from in and around Formula 1 make the switch to Formula E, such as Sauber junior Zane Maloney who recently joined ABT Lola from Formula 2.

A lot of F1 drivers have moved into the championship after their careers at the highest level came to an end. Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds would also like to tempt Zhou Guanyu to join the grid with his future at Sauber uncertain.

Jean-Eric Vergne won the Formula E championship twice after leaving F1 and ex-F1 driver Sebastian Buemi has had similar success, winning the title for Renault e.dams.

Nissan had a mixed season last year in the series, finishing fourth in the Teams’ Championship, but they failed to challenge Jaguar, who won the title.

Given his results for the Japanese manufacturer, Nissan have also parted ways with Sacha Fenestraz. So, the 25-year-old is now looking for other options for 2025 and this includes in Formula 1, as Fenestraz explained when speaking to the Corazon de F1 YouTube channel.

Fenestraz floundered during his two-year stint in Formula E, failing to score a podium finish and finishing in the top five just once.

The Argentinian driver struggled at Nissan and was comfortably beaten by his teammate Oliver Rowland last season, who scored 156 points compared to Fenestraz’s 26.

He is considering a move back to Japan and competing in Super Formula, although nothing is confirmed yet.

Despite a difficult spell in Formula E, Fenestraz has also started collaborating with a Formula 1 team and is aiming to drive in a test next season.

He said: “I’m just working for a Formula 1 team. If things are going well, there is a chance I can hold a test next year and I want to give myself every chance of doing well in that test.”

A Formula 1 test for Sacha Fenestraz may help boost Argentinian interest in the championship

There is a lot of interest in Formula 1 in Argentina, which Franco Colapinto’s rise and the Williams driver’s superb run to eighth place in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is now helping to appease this season.

Colapinto is the first Argentinian F1 driver since Gaston Mazzacane competed in four rounds for the Prost team in 2001.

A test for Fenestraz may boost the popularity of F1 in Argentina even further, especially given Colapinto may not be on the grid for the 2025 season.

Fenestraz never quite made it to F1 in his junior career after being a Renault junior and leaving Europe to race in Japan for the first time in 2019.

He has also driven well in a range of single-seaters during his career on the path to F1, finishing third at the Macau Grand Prix in 2018.
