Aston Martin told 27-year-old would be ‘absolutely fantastic’ option for 2025 seat

Aston Martin have been told that Williams star Alex Albon would be a really good option for the team heading into the 2025 season.

Legendary driver Fernando Alonso has entered the final year of his contract, while Lance Stroll’s future is less obvious.

Speaking on The Race Podcast, journalists Scott Mitchell-Malm and Edd Straw have been discussing what the British team could do with their driver line-up in 12 months.

Aston Martin might just be on the cusp of breaking into the top tier of teams in Formula 1.

They made more progress than any of their rivals heading into the 2023 season.

The hiring of Fernando Alonso as Sebastian Vettel’s replacement looked like an inspired decision from both parties.

While they fell away in the middle of the year, they delivered some decent results towards the end of the campaign.

The question is whether Alonso and Lance Stroll are the combination of drivers the team wants for the foreseeable future.

The Spaniard will turn 43 this year and while extending his contract still seems like a good idea, there’s still a question mark over whether Stroll is the right man for a team looking to regularly compete for podiums.

Aston Martin may want to consider a move for Alex Albon heading into 2025 if they have any doubts over either of their drivers.

He could easily be a team leader moving forward or an equal status racer if they stick with Alonso.

The 27-year-old is going to have plenty of options on the table, so whoever wants him might have to act quickly.

Albon would brilliant option for Aston Martin in 2025

Speaking about the Silverstone-based team, Mitchell-Malm said: “I think [Alex] Albon would be an absolutely fantastic option for Aston Martin alongside [Fernando] Alonso.”

Straw replied: “Albon feels like a great option for that team if either of their drivers leave.”

Mitchell-Malm concluded: “Yeah, I completely agree. I think he could slot in there as the leader or an excellent, basically equal-status driver in the ‘second’ car.”

Aston Martin are reportedly only 60/40 to keep Stroll for 2025 which would open up a spot for Albon.

Placing the Thai driver alongside Alonso would suddenly make them one of the most formidable pairings on the grid.

Alonso will have retirement in the back of his mind and the team will want to secure a driver who can lead them in the long-term once he’s gone.

Whether they believe that’s Stroll is hard to know, meaning Albon may end up being the perfect fit.
