Aston Martin might have just fixed their biggest issue ahead of 2026 after Fernando Alonso’s British Grand Prix comments

Aston Martin had a worrying start to the 2025 Formula 1 season, but have recently started to find some form again.

At one stage, Lance Stroll had scored 100% of their points, and Fernando Alonso was left to leave most events empty-handed.

Unfortunately, Adrian Newey is not working on this year’s car, which may be part of the reason why Aston Martin have struggled a little.

Almost the entire focus is on the 2026 F1 regulations, as they attempt to start the new regulations on the front foot and challenging for silverware.

Alonso did something Aston Martin thought was ‘impossible’ by doing a one-stop at the last race in Austria, helping him to an excellent seventh place.

Alonso looked past the Austrian Grand Prix because he was more excited for the upcoming British Grand Prix and further upgrades that are coming. They could bring big things.

Fernando Alonso’s ‘worked better’ admission shows Aston Martin might have fixed big issue

For two years, Aston Martin have been unable to make positive progress. They started 2023 challenging for victories, and ended 2024 struggling to progress from Q1.

Aston Martin were debating one thing after Canada, and couldn’t understand whether their recent upgrades had worked.

That has been a very common theme for them, with poor correlation between what the data tells them a part should give them compared to what is actually does.

Speaking at the Official Formula 1 pre-race press conference ahead of the British Grand Prix, Alonso hinted that their upgrades worked better than expected.

“The Imola package didn’t seem that big and it worked better than the tunnel suggested,” he said.

If they have finally found a way to add something meaningful to their car, then it could suggest that they have cured one of their biggest woes heading into the 2026 season.

How much longer does Fernando Alonso have left in Formula 1?

Alonso has officially been in Formula 1 longer than eight of the 19 other drivers on the grid have been alive (March 2001).

There aren’t many sportsmen who have shown so much longevity in their careers, with Tom Brady in the NFL going until the age of 45 being an example.

The two-time champion is under contract until the end of 2026, but he might continue longer if he continues to perform at a high level.

He hopes that Newey can help lead him to a special third world title, over 20 years on from winning his last one with Renault.
