A shakeup in Aston Martin’s technical team has occured towards the end of the season, with technical director Dan Fallows stepping down.
Fallows joined Aston Martin in April 2022 from Red Bull and played a key role in their growth and development, which included earning eight podiums with Fernando Alonso last season.
The team has failed to recapture this success during the 2024 season, with billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll placing increased pressure on the technical team.
Legendary F1 car designer Adrian Newey is set to join the team in March next year, while former Ferrari technical chief Enrico Cardile will also make the jump to the Silverstone-based squad.
This left many to question whether Fallows fitted into the new structure, given he was supposed to be the head of the technical department.
With it clear that he is now set to move to another area of the business, journalist Scott Mitchell-Malm has highlighted how the team made a ‘very rare’ decision with Fallows when speaking on The Race podcast.
Aston Martin allows Dan Fallows to stay within company group
It was expected that Fallows would exit the team in the wake of the technical management structure change with Newey onboard, however it appears the team will keep him involved in the wider group.
Mitchell-Malm states that it was likely a mutual decision made by both parties to avoid any unwanted costs in their contract.
“The fact that he’s going somewhere else in the group makes it a little bit harder to determine what happened. My suspicion, reading between the lines and speaking to people, is that he probably wanted out and hasn’t found somewhere else to go,” said Mitchell-Malm.
“Aston doesn’t mind him leaving because they don’t think he’s the golden ticket, but they’re not willing to pay him off. So the compromise position for both is that he goes somewhere else in the group.
“It’s very rare for this to happen and the person to stay. Normally we see them go to another team and they have been removed from their position and they leave. But it’s not a surprise, partially because of that speculation but also because of the Aston Martin trajectory.”

Aston Martin under pressure to change driver lineup after Lance Stroll errors
The Sao Paulo GP turned into a disaster for Aston Martin when both cars suffered crashes in qualifying and resulted in signficant repairs being made hours before the race.
Lance Stroll then failed to start the race when he spun off the track and attempted to rejoin, only get his car stuck in the gravel. Peter Windsor said the error was a ‘disgrace’ from Stroll and called on Aston Martin to consider making a change.
Aston Martin could end up hiring Yuki Tsunoda given his links to Honda, which are set to be their main engine supplier from the 2026 season.
Stroll has failed to live up to expectations in F1 after failing to deliver a race win in over 150 starts in F1 since he joined the grid in 2017.
