Anthony Davidson has claimed that one key MCL40 trait could be McLaren’s secret weapon at the Monaco Grand Prix.
This weekend, the 2026 Formula 1 season continues with the world-famous Monaco Grand Prix.
Heading into the event, Ferrari are many people’s favourites ahead of the likes of Mercedes, McLaren and Red Bull.
The Scuderia have been labelled as the front runners due to the nature of Monaco being less dependent on engine power and the fact that the SF-26 can be very good in slower corners.

Anthony Davidson says key MCL40 trait could be McLaren’s trump card in Monaco
Sky Sports F1 analyst Davidson has stated that McLaren could challenge at the front due to one aspect of the MCL40.
The 47-year-old revealed that the MCL40 has the shortest wheelbase on the F1 grid, meaning Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri can navigate the slow corners more easily.
Davidson said on Sky Sports F1’s Paddock Uncut: “It might not be good over the bumps and the kerbs, but they have got a short wheelbase, one of the shortest wheelbases, I think, or the shortest.
“And what that does is just give you the chance to turn the car better. A bit like a go-kart, you know, the short wheelbase, the car is even more dynamic and nippy through the corner.
“Let’s see. You have to weigh that all up. The kerb strikes, but the shorter wheelbase could be their friend around here.”
Will F1’s 2026 regulations deliver more overtakes in Monaco, or is the circuit past saving?

Anthony Davidson believes McLaren can still beat Mercedes to 2026 world title
After five races, McLaren currently sit third in the standings with 106 points, 41 points behind Ferrari and 113 points adrift of Mercedes.
Despite the big deficit, Davidson still believes that McLaren could win the world title due to their ability to bring upgrades.
He added: “I think they can. We’ve seen how much they have improved their car from the start of the season to where we are now.
“They really mounted the challenge to Mercedes in Montreal despite Mercedes’ significant upgrades that they brought; McLaren seemed to be right there, particularly in qualifying.
“I know they didn’t have the luck on their side, or dare I say strategy on their side. But you can’t discount McLaren’s upgrade ability. The way the whole factory works, they are world champions for a reason.”
