The news that General Motors will join Formula 1 as an engine supplier should be a huge boost to Andretti’s chances of entering the sport.

AP News reported yesterday that the American car giants would be entering Formula 1 from 2028.

There are currently four engine manufacturers on the grid in F1.

Red Bull’s partnership with Honda has seen them dominate proceedings in 2023, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez winning all but one of this season’s Grand Prix.

Sister team AlphaTauri are the only other team currently using Honda power units, although they have recently worked with McLaren.

They have since switched to Mercedes engines, with the works team, Aston Martin and Williams all using their engines.

Ferrari have used their own engines throughout their history in the sport and unsurprisingly Haas also use their power units due to their close connection alongside Alfa Romeo.

The final team – Alpine –use Renault power units as a continuation from when the team had the same name.

Andretti will use a General Motors engine should they be confirmed as a constructor on the grid.

An all-American combination would go down well across the other side of the Atlantic as they look to grow the sport in the USA.

This weekend’s race in Las Vegas is only going to increase the reputation and standing of Formula 1 in America.

General Motors entry as engine supplier good news for Andretti’s F1 hopes

At this point, there is still some animosity towards Andretti from the current teams in Formula 1.

Three other prospective entries have already had their applications rejected, but the American outfit could be on the grid as early as 2025 and already have ideas of who they want driving for them.

GM’s president Mark Reuss’s comments on confirmation his company would be an engine manufacturer in Formula 1 from 2028 suggested that he expected Andretti to already be on the grid by then.

He said: “We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit.

“With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.

“We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.”

Another team on the grid would be fantastic for F1 fans as it should lead to more action on the track.

It would also help the sport grow in the USA and any worries over the prize money being split between another team should be alleviated by this additional exposure.

Formula 1 needs to embrace growing interest from America and Andretti and GM combining to challenge the traditional powers in the sport can only be a good thing.
