Alex Albon says 25-year-old driver could win more titles than Lando Norris in the next five years

Alex Albon now believes that Mercedes driver George Russell has a better chance of winning a world championship in the next five years than Lando Norris.

The trio were being interviewed on the Formula 1 website with the season beginning to near its conclusion.

The race at the front of the grid is all but done now.

Red Bull have sewn up the Constructors’ Championship while Max Verstappen will win his third driver’s title on the bounce if he finishes sixth in next Saturday’s Sprint Race in Qatar.

However, the trio of F1 drivers were looking forward to a future that potentially isn’t dominated by the Dutchman.

All three drivers were close friends before earning their place in F1 by coming through Formula 2.

They entered at various levels, with Alex Albon associated with Red Bull, Lando Norris with McLaren and George Russell with Mercedes.

It’s not almost been straightforward for each of them, but they all look like they’re going to be established drivers within the sport for some time.

Albon has admitted that in the next five years, he can see Russell winning more world championships than Norris.

He also joked that it would all depend on where the young Brit was driving going forward as with rumours circling about his long-term future with McLaren.

Albon backs Russell to win more titles than Norris

Lando Norris asks Alex Albon and George Russell who is most likely to have a World Championship under their belt in the next five years.

Albon jokes: “Depends what Lando [Norris] signs to!

“I reckon, it has to be you George [Russell]. You’re in a bit of a dip right now with the team. Oh, I feel awkward saying that seeing as we’re here in Mercedes.

Russell replied: “I mean, I take pride that you say we’re in a dip yet we’re still P2 in the championship. We’re 40 points ahead of P3!

Albon says: “Lewis [Hamilton] must be doing a good job!” before Russell adds: “To be fair, he’s well ahead of me in the championship this year.”

Albon’s prediction will be based on the fact that Russell’s Mercedes team have a lot more recent experience than Norris’s McLaren outfit at winning titles.

Russell hasn’t had his finest season with Lewis Hamilton easily outscoring him in the driver’s championship.

He’s level on points with Norris but currently based on the number of podiums the young McLaren driver has achieved in recent races.

It will all depend on how their cars shape up in 2024 and beyond and whether Red Bull can even be caught.
