£270k-a-week Formula 1 driver now becoming more and more unhappy at current team

Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso is becoming more and more unhappy at the team despite a positive result in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

When Lance Stroll put his car in the wall in Jeddah, Mike Krack’s team were relying on the experienced Spaniard to deliver points.

He put in another fantastic display but speaking on The Race Podcast, Samarth Kanal believes he’s now seeing if he can move on ahead of the 2025 season.

Alonso becoming unhappy at Aston Martin

There have only been two races this season, but already a well-established pecking order is developing at the front of the grid.

Red Bull could conceivably win every race this season, with Max Verstappen winning at a canter and Sergio Perez not having any trouble finishing behind him.

Ferrari are the best of the rest and Charles Leclerc drove very well on Saturday to earn his podium of the season, while Ollie Bearman starred on his Formula 1 debut.

Mercedes and McLaren are next in line and Oscar Piastri’s 4th place was impressive, to say the least.

However, Fernando Alonso produced a brilliant result and added another 10 points to his tally.

There’s now a worry that Alonso is becoming more unhappy at Aston Martin given they’re no longer capable of challenging for podiums.

In Bahrain, Alonso was left marooned in 9th, unable to catch the top four teams but miles ahead of Lance Stroll.

While there have been calls to replace the Canadian, it seems more likely that the £270k-a-week driver will move on at the end of 2024 instead.

Alonso’s Formula 1 future is up in the air

Speaking about the 42-year-old, Kanal said: “I think his unhappiness is growing bit by bit. He’s let out little hints that he is looking elsewhere now and especially Hamilton’s move to Ferrari next year might have opened up a bit door for Alonso to explore there.

“Now, I can’t say for sure if he’ll move to Mercedes but what I can say is that he is looking elsewhere and with races where the Aston Martin isn’t quite keeping up to the pace with other teams, Alonso does seem to imply afterwards that it has had an effect on his mindset when it comes to contract discussions.

“There’s also the fact that Aston Martin isn’t perhaps punching where it should be punching in the Constructors’ Championship with Stroll crashing out on his own accord today, it seems like there’s one car that’s competing for Aston Martin which is a bit of a shame.

“And that’s something that Alonso will be looking at as well.”

Alonso won’t want to retire any time soon but it’s understandable why he’s becoming more and more unhappy at Aston Martin.

He’s capable of challenging for podiums and even race wins in the right car and it’s hard to see Krack’s team producing that any time soon.

Alonso is reportedly on Mercedes’s list to replace Lewis Hamilton and that would be an exciting final flourish to his career.

Otherwise, it’s hard to see another team he could move to that would offer him a better shot at winning races, unless one of Red Bull’s two drivers decides to move on…
