Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher has admitted that he’s aiming to return to the F1 grid in 2025.

Schumacher was speaking after his first year outside of Formula 1, via Corriere dello Sport, ahead of his return to racing next year.

Mick Schumacher’s 44-race Formula 1 career was cut short after two years at Haas last winter.

Guenther Steiner decided he wanted a more experienced pair in the car this year, pairing Kevin Magnussen with Nico Hulkenberg.

It turns out the car was the hardest to drive on the grid and they finished bottom of the Constructors’ Championship.

While Schumacher may feel he dodged a bullet not having to drive that Haas this year, dropping out of the sport never makes it easy to get back in.

Coupling that with the number of top young talents who can’t find a spot on the grid and all of a sudden, you can slip out of the sport completely.

Schumacher has admitted that he’s eyeing a return to F1 in 2025, although it is unlikely to be with his current team Mercedes.

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both signed contract extensions this year and they’ve got promising youngster Frederik Vesti also waiting in the wings.

The driver market is expected to be active next year after every team retained their line-ups heading into 2024.

Schumacher eyeing F1 return in 2025

Speaking about his future, Schumacher said: “I know I have to convince other people that I deserve a seat in Formula 1. Unfortunately, a lot of contracts are multi-year deals and there’s not really a chance for 2024. It’s a bit of a difficult position to be in, but in 2025 there will be many more possibilities and we will see.

“It’s important for me not to stay out of a car for too long.

“I will keep very close links with Formula 1 and this will allow me to demonstrate to the people in F1 that I still deserve an opportunity in the top category of racing and that is where I belong.”

It will be interesting to see whether Schumacher can break back onto the F1 grid in 2025.

He’s going to be racing in the World Endurance Championship next year alongside the likes of Robert Kubica, Nyck de Vries and Daniil Kvyat.

There simply aren’t enough seats on the grid right now for drivers like Schumacher to be guaranteed a return in the future.

If he wins the series then he will start to turn some heads, but otherwise, he’ll be relying on his reputation to secure a seat rather than his raw pace.
