Toto Wolff has to block F1’s proposed ‘erratic’ rule change if Mercedes want to win the 2026 championship

Mercedes are relying on a fresh start in 2026 to bring some life back to their Formula 1 operation and help them become championship contenders again.

George Russell is leading their charge well and has managed two podiums from the opening two races this year. He is third in the drivers’ championship.

But Mercedes are not where they want to be – competing for victories and titles. They have been hoping for a while that the 2026 F1 regulations can be a turning point in their fortunes.

Team boss Toto Wolff was the man who helped the German manufacturer nail the big engine changes back in 2014.

Factory ‘noise’ suggests Mercedes could dominate F1 from 2026 with their power unit already in a good position. They might have found a V6 edge again.

Fernando Alonso’s career could end with F1’s rule change if they opt to shorten how long the V6 is used in favour of a return to V10 engines. It would also deafen any Mercedes advantage.

Toto Wolff must block ‘erratic’ 2026 F1 rule change if Mercedes want to win titles

Effectively, every Formula 1 team must vote in favour of a rule change for it to be passed. If it wastes years of hard work and damages possible championship hopes, why should Mercedes accept it/

Wolff shared his thoughts about a possible change with Motorsport.com and criticised discussing a move away from them before they have even begun.

“We are looking a little bit silly as Formula 1 when we are attracting the likes of Audi and we are pitching a great hybrid engine with sustainable fuels, and then suddenly we are saying we actually only want to keep it three years and not five,” he said.

“We need to be a stable and reliable partner that says: ‘These are the regulations, that is the investment budget, you need to calculate for it’. And then people can join or not.

“But – before regulations have even started – to say let’s look at the next engine and power unit, I just think it makes Formula 1 look a little bit erratic.”

Why Toto Wolff should reject the proposed 2026 F1 rule change

If rumours that Mercedes’ 2026 power unit is in a strong position, it would be a waste of their investment and hard work for the new regulations to last three years rather than the regular five.

The same goes for the likes of Audi and Cadillac, who are going to have spent a lot of time and resources only for the engine to be useless after a few years.

Another issue the team currently has is their driver line-up, which is yet to be solved for 2026 with both drivers out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

If Kimi Antonelli continues to impress he will be almost guaranteed, while Russell may finally be looking for a bit of a payrise on his current deal.

Could Max Verstappen be of interest to them if Red Bull continue to struggle? It’s impossible to rule anything out yet.
