Lando Norris has finished runner-up in the 2025 Formula 1 crash standings alongside his championship victory this season.

The world champion racked up a total bill of £1.7m ($2.34m) for McLaren this year, accounting for 67.15% of the team’s total bill in 2025. In comparison, his teammate Oscar Piastri saw just £859,530 ($1.14m), placing him 14th in the overall deconstructors’ standings.

Formula 1 is known for being a costly sport, with crashes resulting in eye-watering bills for the teams involved. Incidents can be a regular occurrence during a race weekend, with replacement parts costing staggering sums.

As expected, some drivers are more prone to having accidents than others, with Sergio Perez topping the list in 2024 and Logan Sargeant the year before. Rookie Gabriel Bortoleto took the unfortunate top spot on the 2025 deconstructors’ championship list, after costing Sauber £2m ($2,73m).

Last season, Pierre Gasly achieved the historic feat of becoming the first driver to complete a full season without causing an accident, however the Frenchman was not as lucky in 2025, racking up a total of £825,808 for Alpine this season.

F1 Oversteer has taken a look at the top five most expensive crashes of the 2025 season using the results compiled by the Formula 1 dashboard, using data from Reddit user u/basspro24chevy.

Oliver Bearman caused the first crash of the 2025 season, which resulted in the fifth most expensive accident of the year. During FP1, the Haas rookie lost the rear of his car at Turn 10, which saw Bearman speed through the gravel before catching the grass and spinning him into the barriers at high speed.

The crash saw significant damage to all four tyres, which remained connected to the Haas by just the tethers. The front wing was also destroyed, with the team facing a further blow when it was discovered both the gearbox and power unit needed to be replaced.

In total, Bearman’s crash cost the team an estimated £758,364 ($1,012,000), with replacement parts including the front and rear wings and suspensions, two tyres, two brakes, the gearbox and the brake drum deflector.

4. Lando Norris – Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Lando Norris cost McLaren an estimated £759k ($1,015,000) when he crashed during Qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The now world champion saw a dramatic crash during Q3, which dropped him to 10th on the grid for Sunday’s race around the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

The incident proved pivotal for the championship standings, with the Brit ultimately finishing fourth and handing the lead of the title fight to his teammate Piastri, who then kept a steady hold on the top spot for 15 races.

Norris was too quick back on the throttle as he came out of Turn 4, which saw him catch the exit kerb before sending the McLaren flying into the concrete wall at Turn 5. Norris branded himself an “idiot” following the crash, which saw the team endure costs for two wheels, two brakes, a new gearbox, both the front and rear suspensions, a new front wing and sidepod.

Lance Stroll experienced a heavy crash during FP2 for the Dutch Grand Prix at the notorious Turn 3, where Daniel Ricciardo had broken his hand in 2023. The Canadian had seen a strong performance during the first practice session, where he finished in P2, before the incident later in the day.

Stroll appeared to have misjudged the braking zone heading into the steep corner, which resulted in him locking the front left tyre of his Aston Martin and understeering before the car went spinning into the barrier.

The crash cost the Silverstone-based team an estimated £877,953 ($1,174,000), with heavy damage to the right side of the car. Aston Martin needed to replace the survival cell before FP3, which saw them break curfew to get the car fixed in time for Saturday’s sessions.

2. Yuki Tsunoda – Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix

Yuki Tsunoda experienced a nasty crash during qualifying for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, which resulted in estimated damages of £913,849 ($1,222,000) for Red Bull.

The Japanese driver was attempting to do his first flying lap of the session when he caught the kerb with his rear at Turn 5, which sent him spinning towards the gravel trap at Turn 6. The Red Bull then flipped upwards as Tsunoda hit the barrier, sending him up into the air and upside down before coming to rest right side up.

The car saw significant damage, which resulted in repairs to all four tyres, both the front and rear wings, both sides of the front and rear suspensions, a sidepod and the floor.

1. Gabriel Bortoleto – Brazilian Grand Prix

Gabriel Bortoleto takes the most expensive crash of 2025 after Brazil Sprint Race accident

How do you think the Audi driver will perform in front of his home crowds next season?

Gabriel Bortoleto’s shocking crash during the Brazilian Grand Prix Sprint race has topped the list for the most expensive crashes in 2025. The Brazilian rookie crashed his Sauber on the final lap, resulting in an accident which cost an estimated £1.16m ($1.56m).

Sauber replaced both the front and rear wings and suspensions on both ends of the car, as well as fixing all four wheels, their brakes, both sidepods and the floor.

Bortoleto suffered a 57g crash at Turn 1 but walked away from the accident uninjured. The young driver said he had experience locking on his rear tyres after hitting a bump whilst braking and with the DRS still closing, Bortoleto was sent flying into the pit lane wall, before bouncing up through the air and into the opposite barrier at Turn 1.

After such a significant crash, it comes as no surprise that Bortoleto tops the list for the most expensive crash in 2025, alongside the overall crash standings for the season.
